I would mount on some closed cell foam or solid rubber like stable matting to stop water and crap gathering up underneath it, treat any hole made with waxoyl or similar and maybe use stainless bolts with isolating washers. Original Member Pie n Pea Club.

Thinking of the difficulties of making a 100% waterproof barrier & the issues Lotus had with bonded mats on ali panels and water ingress:
I think I'd be tempted to fit the box on spacers and try and maintain an air gap. It wouldn't be hard to fit it on Dzeus fasteners and then you could take it out every so often to check for corrosion and dry completely. Personally I mounted mine straight on top of the rubber mat that came with the 90. I found that any water that then gets underneath just runs out of the back of the truck when parked on a slight slope. I think it's completely pointless to try and make a collender waterproof. The MSS draw has never let a drop in though.

Mark - for me the issue would be the rubber mat actually holding water beneath it and so attacking the ali. With only rubber mats fitted, it's easy to lift them every so often and either allow the loadbed to dry naturally or give it a dry with a cloth before re-fitting.
A permanently fitted drawer will not really make this possible - unless you go to the trouble of unbolting and removing on a regular frequency. I think there's enough evidence about to confirm that leaving it wet/damp will cause damage over time - it's just whether on initial installation it's better to waterproof it to stop water getting below the drawer in the first place; or better to make it a quick remove so it's easier to dry out! |

Supercat, I see your point, I guess it's slightly different here as its so hot. I think then, making it easily removable would be the best way to tackle the problem. As we all know making a Defender waterproof just isn't possible!

Supacat: That is one of my main concerns as it sits on a slope whilst I'm away & water collects in the back corner were the chest will sit. The quick release idea is good but would negate the reason for the chest as I want it for some added secure storage. Unless there is a locking version or similar.

I had imagined that the quick release fasteners would go through the base of the drawer unit from the inside. The unit would have to be unlocked and opened first before accessing these and so would be as secure as bolting it down. |
