I use the cheapest available frost protection for my fuel cap..... When it freezes, just leave it unlocked. The freezing lock is the real problem, but when unlocked, the cap always comes off, however cold it is

Another vote for a defendoor - not stolen after two years - keeps mud and everything else out

Convinced. I'll start with a defendoor, but if anybody managed to find a good sealed cap please let me know!!!

I just leave mine unlocked in the depth of winter after having to heat up the key with a cigarette lighter on a garage forecourt which is obviously not a good idea ! 2005 Td5 90 XS

in cold weather climates, I have been advised to fit a defendoor and keep a cloth in there too ... (fitted

What do LR do when they are "testing" Defenders in the Arctic with their filler caps ? An answer from anyone in the know would be most welcome as this is a serious design oversight in my view.. Sib

As long as you don't lock it with the key, it is no problem at all to turn the filler cap on and off. When it freezes, leave it simply unlocked

I have two filler caps. one that locks and one that doesn't. The locking one is the variant where the key cannot be removed in the unlocked position, so you unlock it and remove, fill up, and then replace and lock it. Very useful for not forgetting the cap and a lot better than the silly Td5/later one where you have to unscrew it with the (bunch of) keys in.
If I get any freezing issues with my locking cap I just swap it for the non-lockable one. Defendoors don't work on pre-Td5 short wheelbase Defenders as the shape of the cutout is wrong, so I couldn't have one if I wanted one. Which I don't by the way! |

An interesting comment there. We have one fitted to a 300 TDi 110 no problem. I do not think there is a design difference between fuel recess openings between 90's and 110's pre TD5 OK we are dealing with Land Rover tolerances. I do not think the fuel recess oening has changed in decades Defendoors do not fit 130 as they are a larger more rectangular opening. Brendan |

The recess on 'tank-under-the-seat' models is a completely different shape. The top is square rather than arched. Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing? You're braver than I thought!" - Princess Leia |

Indeed. Hence my comment of "pre-Td5 short wheelbase Defenders". Though in reality the defining factor was the placement of the tank as suggested, in general SWBs had the side tank and LWBs had the rear tank. Exceptions exist of course, some LWBs had side tanks. See the shape on my 90 below: ![]() Click image to enlarge Old photo, was a lot shinier then! |
