Hi All,
Have spoken to Jake at Devon 4x4 re suspension for the 130. We are looking to stay as close as possible to standard height. He advised that it may be advisable to use standard height heavy duty springs on the front, and +40mm springs on the rear due to the weight of the quadtech 1 box and supplies etc being housed within it, in order for the defender to stand 'straight'. Sounds right to me but wondered if anyone had any thoughts. Thanks Steve |

I have actually been looking at britparts cellular dynamic kit. Dont want to start off the whole britpart debate. I have the cellular dynamic on my 90 and have been very happy with it. Not sure on what weight will be there in the end but will want HD springs.

Britpart have said that they will donate the suspension to us for our project. Vehicle will be an overlander. As for weight, difficult to access, but will at times be expected to carry load. i.e. roof rack / tent although not on the world record expedition. On that occasion vehicle will be running with no rack and just spares and supplies in the rear.

sounds like the decision has already been made.
just go for something not to specific so spares can be sourced easily. Cheers James 110 2012 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

Just to throw a spanner in the works, why not keep the standard suspension in terms of coil springs? By lifting the rear of the vehicle, you are affecting the front end of the vehicle.
Personally, I'd keep standard Genuine Part coils, with SuperPro bushing. I'd go on more damping, so I'd be setting up the rear axle with 4 dampers in a 'V' configuration. Either Genuine Part or Koni's. TBH, the Koni's have a large volume of oil which helps avoid overheating which helps over the corrugations. The roads into Kenya from the north will rip suspension apart, especially if you are going to get a shove on. Maybe even consider 4 dampers on the front as well. Don't be tempted to use air inserts in the coils, or stiffen the coils used as you will be relying on being able to have full suspension travel. You should make sure the leveling unit is working and the A frame at the rear axle is working and secure. You should really rely on this to keep the rear up with a load on the back. Just my thoughts. |

air inserts is something i was going to suggest, why would you say no to them? Cheers

Simply because they obstruct full articulation and harden the ride. Just my opinion.

I was thinking that using a standard height spring on the front, and a +40mm spring on the rear, when the vehicle is carrying load, the vehicle would sit level. What modifications would i need to fit double dampers?

Hmmmm..... the issue with that is that we have a galvanised chassis from Marsland and so dont want to have to weld anything to it.

The upper is drilled and then bolted to the chassis, Steve. The lower mount is welded onto the axle.
No pressure mate, but if you get this suspension lark wrong, you'll never forgive yourself. Just as one other port of call, give Anton a call at OEC. He's from the bush so he will probably have some comments and advice about the setup. That'll confuse you even more. Last edited by wslr on 1st Nov 2012 11:11pm. Edited 1 time in total |

I know. The suspension is really important. Def dont want to get it wrong. If the Britpart is unsuitable for our needs then i am happy to look at something else. The difficulty is that i have very little knowledge in this area and so am relying solely on advice which is often conflicting.
