i usually answer the phone, say all the right things to get them interested and then politely say, "can you hang on a second, the postman needs me to sign for something" i then carry on with whatever i'm doing listening all the while to the operator on the other end asking what to do after 5 minutes or so have passed by.

i appreciate that everyone has a job to do but wasting my time on unsolicited calls really gets my goat.

I tell them straight away I never give out personal details to cold callers. They always carry on and on, I tell them how interesting it all sounds and they then ask for my details, we hit a stale-mate and they get very annoyed. One chap, after half an hour of persuading me how great his insurance product was, told me to feck off for wasting his time. Laughing
