Mahle do a filter which is shorter and is much easier to fit.

I think you'd struggle get a remote filter kit in there more than just a filter. It does become easier, with experience.

Do you lads generally remove the turbo oil pipe to change the filter ?

Nope You can get at it quite easily, the filter goes back on at a funny angle. A guy over the road from me comes to me for hints and tips for spannering on his td5 disco. Only last weekend, after borrowing my oil drainer, he said that my best tip was "when you begin to lose your patience with something, pack your tools away nicely and go back in the house"
He did this after struggling with the filter, then he came back out after having a brew and just spun the filter on easily, first time! |

Must have a bit of a fiddle with it next time round, I've been removing the oil pipe that goes from the turbo to the block for the last few years.
The heads on the 2 m6 bolts are starting to get a bit worn, same too with the 24mm fitting where it screws into the block, so I'll be trying with without removal next time. |

It's the OC298 Mahle filter. This is made to LR standards, and like was said, is slightly shorter than some other aftermarket filters, and will fit in at an angle. |

The reason I do it is to prevent oil spillage around the engine from the filter, you can basically take it out vertically.
It's not really the loosening thats my problem. |

It is a bit difficult but managable ,i can do it and i have hands like shovels,lol. if a hammer wont fix it,, then its electrical

Put it in a carrier bag (one with no holes in it!) after you have loosened it but before you unscrew it all the way, any oil you drip will be in the bag and you just tie the bag up when its out and you have no mess at all. Pete. |

I use a TD5 oil filter spanner...
