I've fitted one more because I'd read of increased MPG and performance but I did it amongst a whole range of other mods so I couldn't really tell.
What I would say is I bought a cheap version first which let me down when laning one day and the engine overheated. I went ahead and got a Kenlowe but I seriously considered going back to the reliability of the viscous. Instead I always carry it because its simple to put back on. I guess that might tell a story! |

I once fitted a Kenlowe to a Morris Marina B series engine. It replaced a fixed blade fan. The effect was dramatic, the engine wamed up quicker and had a much more effective heater. In addition it went faster and used less fuel at normal speeds. It did what was printed on the tin, however would I fit an electric fan? No. If you drive a Defender are you really concerned about fuel?
![]() When it is over 50C, which it often is here I think it is better to use a few horses to drive a big fan. Being a simple system I would be reluctant to replace it with something more complex. Depends really on your useage. ![]() |

I fitted an electric fan after having engine temp issues in cool weather with the viscous fan... It would never warm up in cold temps so I fitted a 2000 cfm electric which solved my winter issue but I also experienced issues in the really warm temps while towing. I subsequently found a 5300 cfm fan (hard to find) and built a better shroud for i, subsequently I have not had any issues since. I have an engine monitoring system and the highest I've seen temps go is 100c while climbing steep gradient, and 105c climbing same hill while towing (approx 2.5 tons).
I would recommend the electric fan only if you've had issues like I did in winter driving, I am a little concerned about the temps as I don't know what they should be with the viscous. It's WAY nicer for the extra power gain you normally wouldn't have when the viscous really spins in the heat, I haven't noticed much in the way of mpg difference, mainly just extra power in hot weather. |

in my experience fitting an electric fan does not give any justifiable improvement in fuel economy. You may get a quicker warm up time, depending on ambient.
if you have the space a correctly working viscous fan i think is perfect. something less to worry about, if the engine is running its running, no fuse to go or switch to fail (man or auto) if you are limited for space or its a custom install (ie my rad is in the back) then electric fans work but i carry a spare sender (X-Eng type - so have never needed the spare ![]() James 110 2010 XS Utility 130 2011 M57 bespoke Camper 90 2010 Hardtop 90 M57 1988 Hardtop |

The electric one is for the air on and is standard for all Defenders that have it. Darren
