Until I win the lottery and buy an Eberspacher heater
 I was thinking of getting a little heat in the boat. I was going to get an Origo5100 but then thought why not get a Tilley lamp and that will save the light batteries as well if it gives off a bit of heat - only need to take the edge of the cold. I'm up against condensation and CO'2 in the boat and don't want to go down the road of putting flues in etc.
Anyone used a Tilley, do they give off much heat, are they dangerous - don't want the thing to flare up in the cabin 
A nice brass one would be in keeping with the boats interior

I use a Tilley lamp in the garden and camping, they do give off quite a bit of heat but they also give off quite a stink, not sure about CO2, so wouldn't recommend it in confined spaces. You could have a look at Bullfinch lamps which run off propane so are cleaner burning, they are also much brighter than a Tilley, I picked a couple up on ebay for about £10 each.
//edit Tilley's are also a pain in the bum to start as you have to warm them up with meths for about 5 minutes first which could be quite difficult in the dark and also dangerous on a boat. |

I use a Vapalux paraffin lamp. Gives off 1kw of heat and good amount of light. Great piece of kit used by the MOD. Have used Tilley's but prefer the Vapalux.
bpman uses a Coleman twin mantle lamp. Very good light output but I don't know what the heat output is. I bought mine about 4 years ago off eBay for £30 used, they seem to have increase in price ! There's a guy sells old vapalux on eBay, nice brass ones which should go nicely in the boat. However the Coleman dual mantle ones are brighter, run on petrol and give off loads of heat.

I've a Bullfinch lamp (and one for spares) you can have if you arrange collection.
About 35 years old with Calor butane regulator. Got two Tilleys but they're not for sale.  |

i think the coleman might be a bit risky on a boat, the Vapalux is indeed a great lamp and a safer fuel. but, if you really need to light up the place, get one of these ...

Thanks for the kind offer Laurie and Steve a bright idea but heat is the main need, you can buy a cooker that doubles as a heater which I'll look into (Wallis or Willis) some put a flower pot or brick on their cooker though.
I really fancy a Vapalux (OK toy for my birthday ) they were used in a recent high profile arctic expedition apparently! |

Yes the Coleman is probably a top option but petrol onboard would be a no,no. Not sure what the Colemans own fuel is....
BUT I like the traditional value of the Vapalux
