The TD5 can smoke quite badly on start up, not all the time and never at a consistent time - sometimes first start of the day, sometimes the second or third start etc.
It has been on diagnostics, all good, and has a new MAF and the MAP sensor cleaned. No oil in water, no oil loss (apart from the leak from the cam cover !), turbo seemed OK etc so we were a bit stumped as to what was wrong. No apparent signs of fuel in the oil. I asked my indy to change the injector seals - this is what they found when they removed the old ones ![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge I am sure the centres should not be oval ![]() Hopefully this will resolve the problem ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Hi Jim
It was the turbo in the end but the injector seals were shot as well. Fault sounds exactly the same, left overnight and when started clouds of blue smoke, then grey/white. Would get the odd miss fire as well, almost like it was only running on 4 cylinders, which it was due to the oil build up. Sometimes it would do the same if left for few hours and then did a very short trip. No fluid loss that could be seen. Turbo actuator etc was all OK. When in for the seals, the garage left it in the workshop for a few days and did not start it. They had a specialist in working on a D3 when they started it after a couple of days and the workshop vanished in a cloud of smoke ![]() The garage said it could have been refurbished but the cost would only have been slightly less than a new unit. They stuck a new turbo on and, touch wood, never been a problem since. We all think the problem was caused by the previous owner not changing the oil for who knows how many years, four at least as far as we can work out. The oil, what was left of it, was like treacle when drained and it would explain why it didn't happen before the full service, the oil was too thick to weep past the seals etc. It was also too thick to get a sufficient amount to the bearings and hence their demise. Not sure where you are in the country but I can put you in touch with the garage I use in Somerset, in fact the TD5 is there at the moment having the mystery of why the front wheel bearings had an advisory at the MOT four weeks after they were replaced - looks like a bad batch of Timken bearings that are the wrong size by a few mm's. Edit - just noticed you are in Northants so could be a bit far to travel ![]() Bob 2015 Jaguar XE240 R Sport - goes like ....... !! 2013 Defender 90 CSW - sold 2009 Defender 110 Double Cab - sold 2001 TD5 90 CSW - offroad project - sold to a forum member 2011 Porsche Boxster - for the sunny days ! |

Thanks Bob, it sounds like the seals, be a good place to start anyways. I've pulled and pushed his turbine and couldn't feel any play, that's why I asked the question.
![]() Fluids don't move, oil smells like oil ( not diesel), coolant all fine. Bit hard to tell about the oil seals on the turbo, being diesel and tuned ![]() ![]() |

My 110 does this if parked overnight and left after a days work too, blue white smoke and clatter on start up!
Only happens when left for a while! Occasionally sluggish too so ill tell my man in garage to check injector seals! 2008 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) 2015 Discovery 4.5 Black pack Firenze red XS 2008 Corris Grey 110 XS USW (sold) 2011 Santorini Black 110 XS USW (Sold) |

According to the garage there was certainly less smoke on start up after changing the seals, they thought it was fixed and it was just old residual oil burning off. I would say that was certainly a contributing factor to my problem. Makes sense as the oil will creep into the cylinder overnight and then cause problems when you start it. I have a feeling that my worse seal was on no5 cylinder, the one without the heater, and hence why it felt like it was missing or running on four cylinders.
Make sure to use genuine seals and O rings, there are some real horror stories about after market replacements.
