Thanks for the info, it is very valuable!

The car is in the dealers rigth now and they spect to have all open today in the afternoon or tomorrow morning. I like to be there to see what really happens with the clutch. After a long discussion with them I get a courtesy car: a nice Volvo Smile

In our case the problem started with a buzz when change the gear and stop when the clutch were release. Also the gear selection were difficult and in some cases impossible (5th gear was impossible to put). In just 30 k the buzz were noisy and the gears were more difficult to put. So we stop the car and we call for assistance.
In summary are quite similar to the bulletin service.

We will see tomorrow the status and I promise to post what was the fault.

A call from the dealer few minutes ago.

They found one of the springs in the clutch disk broken and the others in bad conditions. In summary they will change all the assembly. I will going to there in few hour more to see how the work is done.

Unfortunately I dont have my camera rigth now but I will try to take some pictures with my mobile.

I was in the dealer's workshop in the afternoon checking the clutch disk.
When I was arrive the transmission was already in position, so no too much to see.

One of the 4 springs were completely out of its position and broke part of its support. The others looks very loose and with signs of wearing.

They will install the new kit and the car will be ready on Thursday.

Loud clonk is possibly excessive backlash or freeplay in the driveline. I've got about 7 degrees of free rotation in both F&R diffs. That doesn't seem to relate very well to the 4 to 7 thou crown wheel to pinion backlash specified in the workshop manual. Land Rover refer to it as "characteristic of the marque Sir". What a load of b******s. The trouble is, the dealer thinks it's wrong but Land Rover don't.

Back to the original subject (well sort of). The bulletin from Eduardo refers to "difficult gear selection", the dealer also reckons that the 2nd gear synchro is shot.

I think that the singular characteristic of the Censored clutch syndrome is this:

Engine running

Gear box in neutral

Depress clutch

Release clutch

Listen for noise at clutch engagement (about half way between disengaged and engaged)

If there is a noticeable noise then the issue is warrantable...I had no argument with my dealer... in and out after two days.

Symptom gradually appeared at about 5,000 km clutch replaced at 8000...now at 14,000 with no reccurrence.

There were no other symptoms like grinding gear changes. Sure there are other noises but that makes it a Defender and not a Honda Civic.

Hi one_iota

In our case the buzz noise was when the cluch was depress and change the gear, some gears wer quite difficult to put. In other conditions no noise. Between the appeareance of the fault (the buzz) and and the complete breakdown were only 40 km.

Question

Just taken my LWB County 57 in for a new clutch assembly today.

Told by local dealership that LR are not making any general recall but are prepared to install the latest clutch assembly (and various other bits) only when "customers" make a complaint. Fortunately my complaint was withih the warranty period.

Symptoms were sticking clutch: and noisy gearstick chatter when engine warmed up.

The service manager admitted they had 4 other TDCis in today, all waiting to have their gearboxes put back in!! All having had new clutch assemblies fitted.

My 2007/8 Puma's clutch failed three days ago, 700km from home in the middle of the Kalahari desert, and I was towed home by a Land Cruiser. Sad.

The clutch assembly was replaced, it took half a day. The problem is the pressure plate; Ford's clutch has a pop-riveted pressure plate, which keeps the 4 springs in place. In my case, one of the rivets came loose. The clutch has now been replaced with a clutch that is not Ford spec, with a moulded pressure plate. The problem simply cannot re-occur.

Typical symptoms - clutch rattles when in neutral, the rattle disappears when gear engaged. Also, when the engine is switched off, you can hear the loose clutch assembly (transfer case) rattle/shudder as it comes to a standstill.

Interesting - i had a rattle fixed by a new selector guide.

THen ive had a new clutch, they broke the selector so replaced it and mine has started doing this, only slightly in 5th and 6th. Mike
