Well, decades ago developed and built with pride in Graz in Austria. At same plant where also the Mercedes G and other 4x4 for other brands are being developed and built. Then Austrocanadian Frank Stronach bought the company and moved the Pinzgauer production to your island. Even the guys from Top Gear already had fun with them.
Great fun to drive them, had the pleasure during my military service in good old Austria. BR Oskar |

I know that while we were all unpacking tents and setting up in the rain he was microwaving his tea in the back and climbing into hit cot bed!
Just wasn't so sure when we started climbing down rocks and axle twisters! Great fun to have some military vehicles along with us though! |

There was one on the Macmillan Challenge in 2011. It went pretty well, although couldn't keep up with Betsy (my 2a) and was even thirstier
![]() ![]() Click image to enlarge It broke down near the end when the pulley on the fan belt detached. Great vehicle though, and build like a brick ![]() 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

They look ungainly, but no LR will ever match one off road.

A couple of pictures from a BAMA event in 2009
![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() Click image to enlarge Very capable off road due to axle lockers however i understand that they were not to popular in current conflicts due to the postion of the crew over the front wheels in case they ran over an IED.. Mark |

Not bad vehicles, loads of reliability issues too.
Main problem I came across with the few I repaired was that for some reason ALL the wires on the vehicle are the same colour!!!! They are only more capable than a LR because of the lockers........ and for the price of one of them, you could buy lockers, bigger wheels and portals for a LR which will then destroy the Pins. Only use for them now is for RAF airfield ambulance and peace time gun tractor- all other variants have been binned because of vulnerability....... which they do an armoured version, but they have the off-road ability of a pizza. The irony of the Pinzgauer is that in the late 1960's they were one of the vehicles trialled by the Army as the tractor for the then new 105mm howitzer.
Land Rover also tenderred for te job and developed the 101 Guess what the Army now use to pull the field gun now the 101's are all decommisioned ![]() I have been fond of them seince reading revues of them in the 80's, they are also the big brother he stonkingly amazing SDP Halflinger |

Pinzgauer awesome off road ability. I have had one and intend to have another some time soon. But I still love my landy best of all.

They are very good vehicles and many claim better than land Rovers but . Don't agree I've seen land Rovers to much more off road then a pinz and your right they look very unstable but they do trump most vehicles in articulates on the tubular chassis

We've been out with this guy a lot now and to be honest as a terrain covering laning vehicle it doesn't compare to a Land Rover. Even with its all round difflocks. It gets stick or struggles over terrain the Land Rover breezes over so often and then when you get on a tight scratchy lane its a real struggle getting it through.
Driving it on something like the Pheasant Steps or the V Gulley in mid Wales and it tips and wobbles about so badly you need nerves of steel to drive it. It only comes into it's own in deep ruts where the Land Rover bottoms out and then when you park up for the night on a laning weekend. While we are faffing in the rain putting tents up, he just climbs into his bunk! ![]() He got well stuck at Tong last weekend though. What do people mean when they say unstable? Are they thinking of the inherent tipping point issue with any 6x6 vehicle rising a crest or something else?
I think the design is good but has now been overtaken by things such as this: ![]() Click image to enlarge ![]() |

I think it's the lack of articulation. If you watch my video of it in Wales on the Pheasant steps it tilts across its axis especially when dropping forward over rocks and the like. Check out my YouTube channel for green laning and Land Rover "how to" videos.
