Extra "bar" in front on 110 XS?
Hi all,

I was looking at two different 110 XS, a Puma and a Td5. I noticed that the Puma has what appears to be an extra "bar" fitted to the front of the truck, underneath and slightly behind the front bumper.

None of the Td5 110's I looked at had this, nor did the 110 SW.

Does that extra bit have a name or purpose, or am I just seeing things?

If it's the tubular bar I'm sure it's to protect the steering damper and track rod etc 2.4 90 XS

It's to protect the steering. Almost all military vehicles have them fitted. There not very expensive. 130 crew cab

They used to be standard equipment on Defenders, no doubt deleted to save cost.

I fitted one of these instead:

I have a steering guard but had a underride protection bar on the last - to be honest, both served a purpose. The steering guard gives you a big skid - i really hammered the bar with some force. Mike

Thanks guys - it is indeed the tubular bar. I wasn't sure if it was anti-sway or served some other purpose.

caterham - I think they just bolt on. If you open and LR mag there are lots of adverts, either steel or alu, one or 3 piece, with/without recovery eyes.

By the way Mad Cow, I can still read your reg in that image (and your house number on the bin!)

It's a Rebel 4x4 "Aluminium Steering Guard (10mm brackets)" the side brackets are steel with an aluminium plate. It is listed at £96 although I paid £90 at the Billing Show in the Summer.

Very easy to fit, bolt each side plate on, the offside rear uses steering mount (the standard bolt being plenty long enough) and they supply a new bolt for the rear nearside. The front mounts use the existing tie down brackets, you just remove the plates (the guard has proper recovery points that can be obviously be used to secure the vehicle).

One problem I found was the rear mounts for the plate were too far apart even though the holes were slotted. I just added a flat washer between the side plates and the chassis on each bolt (and each side) and that was sufficient to bring the plates close enough together to fit nicely.

And on the basis that a picture is worth a thousand words:

They're not very good either! i used to have one, and bent it right back onto the steering damper (they're only thin walled tube)

OK, they are better than nothing but if you're willing to spend £60 on one, you might as well add another £20 and get a proper bash plate.

the UK Wolf XD's have a solid plate as standard (as did the camels and G4's)

The standard guard on my old 90 was similarly rather battered when I got it. Took it off last month for access to change the steering drop arm and couldn't ever get it to fit again because it was so out of line. Didn't bother when I part exchanged it.

It's still sitting in the back garden waiting for my next trip to the dump Very Happy MAD COW

I too fitted one. I think I got it from John Craddock in the end but here's another example from FirstFour . It's pretty cheap at £75 although mine was Aluminium and around £95. One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS
