Tyre balancing query
Last year when my boosts and 235/85 BFG ATs were purchased from Paddocks I had one faulty one which they kindly replaced.

I have noticed during the last year (12k miles) that there was a slight shake on the steering which I put down to stones in the tyres, sheer size of the things etc but this morning I went to a tyre fitters to have them all checked.

One of the front wheels was out by 130 grams Shocked and all the others were out by between 50 and 80g. By moving the tyre around the rim and by using a combination of stick-on and clip on weights the guy got them perfect and I immediately noticed the effect on the steering.

What I would like to know is if there would be any lasting harm done to either bushes, ball joints or indeed anything else by such badly out of balance wheels assuming they were like that for the last 12k miles even though I rarely go above 60 mph

BFG are alway differcult to balance and take a lot of weight, maybe you have thrown some weights.

Always best to keep tyres balanced as they will last longer.

Would not have thought any great harm has been done. Andy.

Had a VW Transporter (T3) that had unbalanced wheels for at least a few years before I bought it. When I first drove it, it shook like hell (previous owner never bothered) but after balancing the wheels it was fine. Never any steering/suspension problems. I imagine Defenders are a lot more solidly built...

Incidentally, it's amazing (in Germany at least) how many garages fit tyres without balancing them afterwards Rolling Eyes

*Edit* Just remembered one of the tyres disintegrated on the way to the UK a few years later - probably a link there Confused Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Oh thanks fellas

funnily enough here in Ireland common practice in many tyre fitting places is to balance the front wheels only. I've had a few sets of tyres fitted and when I have asked for all four wheels to be balanced I've been asked 'why all of them - only the fronts need doing but its your money ' Laughing

you can get wheel balancing powder and beads ... not tried them but popular in CH

Paddocks state on their site that all of their wheel and tyre packages are balanced for you. Weights must have fallen off in transit..... 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Steve, "wheel balancing powder and beads". What do you mean, not sure I understand how that would work for balancing wheels?

Maybe you mean the plastic non abbrasive beads they use in the machine for automatically thoroughly mechanically clean the rims in a machine when they fit new tires? But what is that powder then? The beads and water combined do work I can assure you, I had it done a year ago on my wife's car when getting her new summer tires.

Here in Switzerland, and as a matter of fact earlier in my home country too, all good tire centers will always balance all 4 tires standard procedure when fitting new tires. Included in the price anyway. Probably not at Kwaksh¦t, but I never was tempted to set foot in there Whistle You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.
