I was looking at the same myself, thinking of a ratchet strap to lock the front end. The book says use timing pins to lock the engine.

I don,t know what the access is like but if possible put two bolts in opposite each other so you can get a bar/lever between them to push in the opposite directon to the bolt you are tightening ! Hope thet makes sense. 2005 Td5 90 XS

^^^ Yeah, I tried that with my old 300, and it just bent the bolts as you can only get M8's in the flywheel (at least the Tdi has the flywheel housing that you can wedge something into)
Timing pins sounds dodgy doesn't it? in the camshaft I presume? (as there'll be no bellhousing to locate into) |

Just looking in RAVE... the flywheel bolts are only 81lb/ft (110NM) which isn't silly tight, so trying to hold the flywheel somehow might not be that difficult.

I've done this as my 2nd engine was from an auto, but I can't remember how I locked the crank, sorry 1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

I've just been into my local dealer to pick up some bits (including the new flywheel bolts)
Asked the service manager how they do it, he said it's really a 2 man job, one to tighen the bolts up, other to hold a socket and long bar on the crank pulley end, and preferably stand on the bar/engine to hold it down. Reckons there's no really "easy" way to do it... and no special tool to hold the flywheel. |

Leave it in gear or put the handbrake on?
Seriously, when the DMF got changed on mine (the engine still in the car) we used a bar and put into the teeth of the starter ring and wedged it to the floor. Might be a bit more difficult with the engine on the bench 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

I think i'll have a play with the engine crane, some chain, ratchet straps and scaffhold bar.
I'll either work or i'll be fitting a new sump |

Great, I have mine to do on Saturday so I guess I will need to brake out the big bar... Was hoping the rattle gun would do it but it sounds like it won't. No wonder they say you need to replace the bolts when you change it!! Jason. |

think i put a socket and long bar on the crank pulley then got a bigger bar and did the other end
