My engine has 137k on it, to be generous it marks it's territory or rather it s seals are going. How well do these engines respond to being rebuilt I'm thinking new big end and crank shells, a full set of seals and gaskets and a set of rings. I know I could shove a lower miles disco motor in and move the turbo but it is a matching number car which could become important if the threatened eu thing comes to pass. Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

Our 300 TDi has 203k miles on the clock, ok we have just had to do head gasket as got split hose and was trying to get off motorway to service station.
Apart from changing hoses if they are getting old, timing belt as required, only change gaskets as required. Our 300 engine has had a hard life, regular oil changes, honing marks are still visible in cylinders. We are not considering rebuilding engine yet. Brendan |

Is there then any merit in going for genuine seals for sump and rocker cover etc or are a combination of britpart and silicone goo as good as owt? Rhubarb and custard let fly with their secret weapon.

A friend of mine running an independent Bath way, while chatting last week, mentioned the Genuine Part 300tdi rocker gaskets don't fit. Just as an FYI, so probably worth checking beforehand.

Well we have had genuine ones fitted this week no problem. I would be very surprised if genuine ones did not fit properly.
As for aftermarket gaskets I would look carefully at the reputation of the gasket manufacturer concerned. Yes you might save a few £ on cost of gasket, however if it does not seal properly how many more hours work will be involved in changing it again? Brendan |

That batch came through MJ Fews, and was done 2 weeks ago. Even the second one sent out was incorrect. Third was OK.

When I did the sump on my 300TDi I used a form of silicon from the stealers, not a drip since in about 4-5yrs.
My 300 (Disco) has done 109k started on the button after sitting for a month the other day and not a drip from it, a cracking engine and as others have said, barely run in. After listening to its engine note for 11yrs I quite miss it now with the Puma. Darren |

Turbo - is the same on a 300tdi (disco and defender), it's a 200Tdi that has a different turbo set up. If you are going to rebuild it - do a proper job... if it was mine: Oversize Pistons (taking it to a 2.6), new rods, new crank unless 100%. Fully Balanced Bottom End (inc flywheel and clutch) Block all refaced etc and properly measured for head gasket thickness. Head - ported and gas flowed. Can go big valve if needed. Modified and rebuilt Injectors and Injector Pump One of my 300Tdi Variable Geometry Turbos Modified inlet manifold And a few other modifications.... Then look at charge cooling rather than intercooling Will look standard, but will out perform a 2.8TGV.... and as long as you don't go wild with pump set up, will be good for another 100 k.
