Odd problem - Shaking, prolly transmission?
Hi,

Newbie here.
Please have patience with me. Embarassed

My recently bought 2003 110 has a rather interesting problem.
Two actually, but I'm not sure if these are related?
195000kms on the clock.

1)When the engine is cold, the clutch howls for the first hundred metres or so, but then goes away.
I suspect this being a bearing problem.

2)When the engine is warm, and flooring the clutch (for parking, or creeping to traffic lights) there is clear shaking that can be felt on the pedal and also on the stick. As soon as the car comes to halt, it goes away.
One local Landy expert has suggested dual mass flywheel begining to go, but should it not give rattle everytime when I press the clutch and should not be much affected by engine temps? This problem does not appear before the engine is properly warm.

I'm all thumbs what it comes to the engine and transmisson dept..
With my previous Defenders I have always given the car immediately to the local garage.
Now, I'm planning on learning a bit more about these things and possibly save some EUR as well as garages capable of fixing Defenders here are far from cheap.

Any ideas much appreciated.

Cheers,
M

Welcome Thumbs Up

Number one (the howling) is quite common or so I am told. Mine is a 2001 TD5 with 57K on the clock and does the same thing. I have been told it is the release ??? (somebody will correct me if I have the wrong one !!) bearing and that it is nothing to worry about until clutch change time.

Point two does sound like a DMF problem but somebody with far more knowledge will be along soon to give you the correct answer.

Thanks Bob!

I do have a gut feeling that I have a complete clutch ovarhaul ahead of me, but better check first.
Having this done here with proper parts will be closer to a 2K€ job for sure. Big Cry

Usually on part clutch, the noise you tend to hear is the spigot bush, which is a self lubricating metal bush in the end of the crank which the gearbox input shaft fits in. Once this starts to get noisy, you need to renew it to stop the noise. Very cheap (£1.50ish) but is often not done at clutch time if not done by a specialist garage. You also run the risk of damage to the oil pressure loom and crank sensor if not done by someone who knows what they are doing when removing/refitting the gearbox.

Your other issue could be several things. It may be worth trying something. Going along at speed on a clear road, depress the clutch pedal and see if the vibration continues. See what happens as this will narrow down the problem.

An AP or Valeo clutch kit, LUK dual mass flywheel unit + hardware and spigot with the labour at an independent is likely to be around £900 with the VAT.

^Many thanks for that!

I'll give this a try.
I'd say that in higher speeds this does not happen, but I'll check.

In UK GBP900, in Finland easily EUR2000. Big Cry

There was a recall c. 2002/3 on TD5-engined vehicles concerning the spigot bush. This is an "oilite" bush which is supposedly lubricated for life, but my understanding is that a rogue batch slipped through without having been imprognated with oil. The result was a squeal from the bush when the clutch pedal was depressed and the engine was cold, or sometimes no squeal but great difficulty engaging 1st or reverse when stationary. My Disco had the bush changed for this reason.

OK. I tested flooring the clutch at higher speed. Nothing,
These shakes only appear when the car is slowing down (might begin at 30kph or so) and are strongest just before it comes to complete halt.
As said, this happens only when the engine is hot.
It feels a bit like the engine is about to stall. As soon as the car stops, this goes away.
I would not be extremely surprised if this would be more engine/electrics related after all, but I still think it is the clutch/transmission dept..

This does not feel too bad, and surely is not severe...yet.
I'm just wonderng what the hell is going on.

Personally, I think my problem #1 is the release bearing(I think that's what it's called in English).
Rather classic problem for Defenders of this age it seems.
Somewhat inconvenient, but would not rush to fix it alone as it is apparently not harming the rest of the car.
However, Blackwolf may well be right. Though I have no problems switching gears, ever.

Thanks for your answers and opinions gents!
