Difflock disengaging problem
I have used low gears as well as difflock today. No problem with the engaging of either low or high gears, but I think to have a problem with disengaging difflock. When engaginig difflock the yellow indicator comes on as it should, and when disengaging difflock that indicator does go out again.
But now with difflock disengaged, the transfer box selector which should remain in the fully right position each time immediately pops a few centimeters to the left, and I cannot get it to stay in the fully right position anymore. I already tried reversing, etc. but whenever I go forward in any gear, the transfer box selector pops back a few centimeters left, to somewhere in between the difflock disengaged and the difflock engaged position. The difflock yellow indicator remains off, and I also do not notice anything strange, but I believe this should not happen. What to do? You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Been out to play with mine. When rammed over hard right, the lever slips back over no more than 1cm to the left when the vehicle is in motion. Ram it over again and it slips back but again no more than 1cm. All drives OK with mine, no issues and the amber light is off so assume the normal disengage position to be between the two.

Martyn, thanks for that. Seems very much the same as mine right now.

But I am not entirely sure that your assumption that this is the way it should be is correct. I virtually never use low gear or difflock, just once per year or so to make sure that the mechanism in the transfer box remains working in all positions. So a year ago or so I did the same as today, (use low gears and difflock), and when going back to high gears and disengaged difflock, I had the same as now, i.e. the transfer box lever when starting to drive forward immediately coming left by one or two cm.... Each time I push it back right, it will move back left....
I had read somewhere on the forum then (but now after searching cannot find that thread anymore) that this is not right, and that in order to fully disengage the difflock and keep the lever properly in the fully right position, one should drive a few meters in reverse.... A year ago that worked, and I can assure you that after my experience then, I automatically over the last year have been feeling regularly if the transfer box lever indeed stayed fully in the right position, and it did.
So as it now keeps moving back into something in between fully right position (=difflock disengaged) and the left positon (=difflock engaged) I wonder what this means. You are correct, my difflock indication light remains off, that is one thing, and I also do not feel or hear anything unusual in the drive line...
So, is there anyone else who knows what to think of this? Normal, or not?

It is normal for therte to be a little play.

The Diff lock works off a spring on or off possition. When you select diff lock it nputs pressure on the spring- when the gears line up the collar slides across and locks them together (this then pushes the switch which puts the light on your dash.

When you dissengage the diff lock it does the opposite. it pulls the spring away and that then allows the collar to slide back which releases the two gears.... and the light goes off.

If you have 'wind up' where the two gears in the collar are tightly jammed in opposite directions it will not let the collart slide off and even though your transfer leaver is across the light is still on. This is when you reverse back and turn the steering from lock to lock (or jack up one wheel) as it releives the stress and the collar then is free to slide, and the light goes off.

The diff lock can't be half on.... well it could but only in extreme circumstances and it would be a one in a million chance.

So..... if the light is off, and you don't feel wind up (steering feels forced) then the diff lock is off and there will be no problems.

......Mine is the same and I use my diff lock on a weekly if not daily basis.

Tks for the exhaustive explanation Glyn. Indeed everything feels very normal, light is off, etc. Only strange thing is that I push the lever all the way to the right position (so difflock off) and when I pull away it immediately returns 1to2 cm left, in a rather distinct way as if it moves into some specific position....

I presume that indeed difflock is fully disengaged now, but still cannot figure out why the lever didn't do this all this time, but now after using the difflock once, I have this again just like a year ago.... A bit weird. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

it may have become a little slacker in its operation with use.

Mine does that...no issues

Tks Marcus. I engaged the difflock sofar a handful of times, like once or twice per year, so let's hope not everything slackens that fast Laughing Luckily no signs of that sofar at all, including the original clutch which gets treated with respect, but holds up rather well Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender.
