thanks likeomg.

I'm going tubeless although I've got reservations over the stuff you shove in the tube to stop punctures....i had problems with the valve last time i tried something similar.

anyway main reason for the update is to let you all know the photos of the hitch lock are now successfully in my gallery if you'd like to have a look. just need to find / take another photo of the anti snake device in case someone is interested in that.

Thumbs Up

likeomg.

need yours (or anyone else in the know) advice.

you mentioned going tubeless and rock rons. are rocket rons 'ust' you also mentioned tubeless is lighter.

I'd already bought some conti moutain king ust and couldn't believe how heavy they were. c240gram heavier each compared to non ust !!??

just got some new hope hoops with stan crest rims which are ust but do I really need ust tyres to go tubeless (bear in mind I don't want to use the latex liquid stuff). ??

cheers.

UST is a different system that doesn't require the goo. The reason the tyres are heavier is because the sidewalls and casing are thicker to stop thorns/rocks puncturing the tyre. You do however need UST rims (like Mavic 800 series) to use the tyres as they're intended - these rims have a sealed back, otherwise air would leak out around the spoke nipples. A few mates tried it a while ago and found it ok for XC bikes, but no good for DH as the pressures are too low to keep the tyre seated.

The other system is Stans Notubes / Joe's Noflats or whatever you want to call it. Basically normal rim, special rim strip (which is like half an inner tube), tyre goo to seal the tyre. No special tyres required. TBH by the time you've put loads of gunge in each tyre, it's probably as heavy as UST. But you can use £9.99 bargain bin tyres...

The exception to this is Stans own rims, which you have. These allow you to use a cheaper rim strip (just well-sealed rim tape really), then just screw a special valve core in to the rim and use goo like before.

Personally I'd go for the goo system over UST, particularly if you have Stans rims already. UST tyres are expensive, heavy and more limited in terms of choice. Plus if you rip them, you'll end up putting the goo in anyway. After a few months of riding on sharp Lake District rocks, most tyres are see-through when you hold them up to the light anyway, so they're gonna need some sealing.

hmmm thank you.

presumably there's no chance of using ordinary tyres without the goo on ust rims?

Nope. They're porous so they'll gradually go flat. Plus the bead probably isn't quite right. And if anything sticks through the tyre (which is likely as they're so thin) it'll go flat in seconds.

Personally I've never had any problems with tyres and tubes in 15+ years of mountain biking. You get the odd puncture sure, but riding technique accounts for most of those Embarassed

Only recently switched to tubeless, and only then because I bought a wheelset that came with Stans rims. Seems good, but ruins my hobby of changing tyres every other ride Big Cry

i run stans flow's even tho i destroy them from time to time, have started putting cash aside for enve's but that will be a while.
use the black chili continenals for lake district riding, prefer them to hans dampfs, have muddy mary's in vertstar for alps and wicked will's too. wicked will is the downhill fast rolling tyre that is the best tire in the dry, the best. but it has to be perfectly dry.

i'd ghetto tubules, you can basically use electricians tape to seal the rim and then 2 scoops of stans.

this video is a bit extreme but it does work, wouldn't guaantee some of the bigger cuts as ive had a few big uns it didnt seal, but if it does go to pot (which it doesn't while your out) you just stick a tube in, no problems..

for some reason tubules feels much nicer its something to do with the inner tube rubbing on the tire.

take a look at that video

also just rememberd friend rolls on specialised tires on his mojo slr, roll very well.

I'm on tyres and tubes on my bigger bike (Commencal Meta): old Mavic 719s with Maxxis Minion 2.35", single ply front and dual ply rear.

Tubeless on the hardtail, Stans ZTR Flow rims with (currently) Maxxis Crossmark 2.1". Pretty comedy with not much tread, but good for trail centres and smoother rides, which is what I tend to do on the bike.

not being funny, slime is ok for riding to get your morning paper but on an actual mountain bike its useless.
