just to let you all know I'm participating in a charity ride along with 4 other mates commencing 12th Sept.
if you're interested to see further details of this please refer to the link bellow; http://www.justgiving.com/doingit4thegirls...ncoldfield in a nutshell we're raising money for two local cancer support groups. I'm hoping that we can raise a very small amount of money from a very large number of people (not that I won't to put people off pledging a little more if thats what they want to do). If you're interested in showing support for this cause and you have questions that aren't answered in the website please ask. ps. for those interested and where appropriate there is more to it than simply looking for money, we obvioulsy need transport, hight energy food, accomodation etc. anything appropriate would be very much appreciated. thanks in advance and sorry if this in anyway offends. was hoping if I could get £1 or £2 off a good percentage of members that would be great.....however you've truly exceed that. many thanks and as you say 'a good cause' thank you very much. your intention is to take some video clips and photos so will down load those in due course. NOTE - please check if you've made a donation as it doesn't appear to have shown. Also I've not mentioned any names in just in case you'd prefer me not. A great big thank you to all - those that have pledged money and I've no doubt that there will be those that will look and feel they would like to help but don't feel they can afford to spare the money - your kind thoughts alone will be greatly recieved. |

First off, good luck.
What I would do, is Email a company called Zyro , http://www.zyro.co.uk/ who do Power Bar products and ask them nicely for your high energy food. Also try Science in Sport http://www.scienceinsport.com/ both these companies supported me and where I worked to raise nigh on £600,000 for Cystic Fibrosis. Transport wise, speak nicely to local hire firms, do a piece in your local newspaper first, asking for support, then use it as a tool to get a back up van, then obviously go the paper and sing their praises, a bit of charity support for a hire firm goes a long way... I used M-Way in Stoke Spares, definitely required. See your USUAL bike shop, tell them what you're doing and ask for a spares package, they will need know what bikes you're all using and don't forget tools. Ask them if you can have everything and you'll pay for what you use, they usually let you have it, or at least at trade prices. Failing that (though doubtful) find a friendly HUGE business and ask for a donation towards it. Spares... Inner tubes get at least ten for each bike, quote sizes and types of valve , presta(high pressure) or schraeder( car type valve) Puncture kits, ask for 'Park Patches' these are like stickers, no glue involved. A spare tyre for each bike. Rarely used. Tyre levers, leave the wife's spoons at home. Track pump, because normal ones are crap. Though this would need be in back up van. Normal Pump. Chains... Tell the shop how many gears each bike has, as chains are specific to how many gears. Note, new chains slip on really worn teeth, get your bikes serviced first. Spare chain links, get SRAM snap links, again speed specific Chain tool, learn how use it. Brake pads, though a good service will check these. Tools, assorted Allen keys and spanners to suit. Again, get your shop service your bikes, so they should be tip top. Clothing wise, prepare for everything. Bepanthen...yep, nappy rash cream, I've used half of a tube this week, as my mileage has gone up as I don't work at the mo. Anything else I can help with, let me know |

I wouldn't go too over board with the spares unless you can bung it in a car that's following. Make sure your bike is in good working order and you've put in a couple of long rides on it before the event, don't get it serviced just before, service it a couple of weeks before to make sure everything that's been renewed is good to go. Mechanics have an awful habit of moving your riding position and a couple of weeks will give you a change to put it back and get used to things again.
Have you sorted your feeding strategy? Feeding is key to success and you need to practice your feeding in training and edit your plan from what training tells you. Some people will get on with certain gels/bars and not others, I could never stomach SIS gels for example but was fine on most other things. You need to plan to eat about 300-450 calories an hour (depending on your size), the idea is to eat as much as you can digest at your rate of pace, if you start to feel sick it's likely you're over eating so stop eating for a while. The faster you go the less you'll be able to digest so going too fast will cause sickness, you need to stay in that sweet zone where you can digest and keep going. That might feel really slow at first but by the end you'll be glad you took your time. As things progress you might find your cravings change, it's likely you'll become sick of solid foods and only want to take on energy drinks and/or gels and water. I used to find once you're at about 10 hours in you'd want something different from sports foods, a good old pack of crisps or twiglets seemed to hit the spot. I think that's due to salt depletion and your body wanting a top up. Make sure your electrolyte levels are topped up before you set off, in the days leading up to the event you should be carb loading and hydrating. Pop a couple of Nuun pills into your water during this period, it'll help prevent stomach cramps on the day. Monitor your moods during the event. Your brain can only process high quality carbs from food, it can't use energy from fat reserves. So if you start to feel peed off, depressed and emotional it's likely you're not eating enough. Problem here is you won't have your thoughts on your plan and strategy and be too busy moaning and cursing but try to remember to take a gel if you get peed off. If you get peed off and feel sick you're going too fast and haven't digested enough so slow down or take a break. If it's really hot then drink more water and not more energy drink as energy drink will mess up your feeding strategy. You can drink extra water without affecting feeding. If it's cold you might find you drink less but make sure you still eat something. Don't put all your eggs in the energy drink or solid food basket, take a supply of eat. Good luck on the day, it's along way to MTB and don't under estimate what you've taken on. |

AndyS sorry if I've in any way implied we're doing in a day (not that you've said we are but that's the way I've read it?) Although we're planning to do the ride in 3 1/2 days with the first day being 65 miles which will require some bike carrying up some of the hills / mountains so I hope we've not bitten off more than we can chew that day. I'm no professional so I can see the first day being very tuff and those that do MTB'ing I'm sure will agree. Those that prefer road biking will probably think 65 miles is peerly half a mornings ride - on tarmac it probably would be and you probably wouldn't carrying your bike either. (the weather being as it is I'm more concerned about being washed away to be fair). |

not sure if I can put this in here or whether it should be in 'wanted / sale'
the reason I say not sure is that I'm not looking to sell but would be happy to exchange for reasonable donation to charity (the charity I'm collecting for as above) + P&P to myself or collection of course. I've got a heavy duty hitch lock made by SAS - fits type alko, A alko, AP alko, B albe, Winterhoff and B&B - unused / new. And an anti snake device for trailer / caravan. please note neither of the above are appropriate for new style Alko hitch with anti snake system. I've tried down loading photos of hitch lock which appeared to work fine but then I couldn't find them so I'll need to try again |

im guessing you will be passing through keswick, coming over whinlatter and down before you get onto the railway line to penrith...
i work part time (when im in the lakes) at one of the bike shops in keswick, the owner has a good stock of c2c items, mainly tires but since your mountain biking it, something like schwalbe furious fred on the back and racing ralph or rocket ron on the front.. well roll very well. & are light go tubuless there is no need for 10 tubes on the c2c, i ride hard< very. 3 times a week and haven't had a flat in 6 months. also lighter. my uncle (shop owner) can be very generous or moody depending on the week he is having, still cheaper than the other bike shop (kmb) and will generally jump over backwards for c2c'ers - there is another service, its called pals, he is c2c logistics, but my uncle did fall out with him, don't let him work on your bikes and take no advice from him, also when he tells you how to ride just ignore him, he cant. |

Glyn - thank you so much for your generosity. sorry to hear this is something close to heart - not knowing the circumstances I can only hope things work out as well as they can going forward.
my friends / comrades aim to do something similar on an anual basis and have considered where practical obtaining suggestions from organisations where a percentanage of money raised should go. for example if def2.net were to hold a vote etc 20% of all money raised next year could go to the charity of choice ? - what do you think?
