WTD: Sankey Trailer - Now Sorted
Hello guys,

I'm in the market for a Sankey trailer - specifically a disc-braked Mk III wide track. The plan is for it to be for both general lugging things about and, with a few modifications, for overland/camping trips, so I'm after a good condition unmolested example.

I'm not in a great rush and am happy to wait for the right one to come along, whilst trying to avoid driving all the way to the big MoD disposal places in Doncaster or Lincolnshire.

So, if you've got something that you're looking to sell that fits the bill, or you know of one that might be available within reasonable striking distance of Berkshire, then please let me know. Darren

Thanks John, but no. It's definitely a disc-braked wide track I'm after. Darren

Hey John, it just occured to me, are you talking about the sand coloured one that you bought off eBay last year? If so, can you refresh my memory on the details? ISTR it had a lid and various other mods? Also, if that is the one, why are you considering selling? I thought it was just what you were looking for at the time. Darren

How come you are going for a disc brake version? They were no better than the drum brake ones- a completely unnecessary upgrade.

I have towed my narrow track all over Europe without a single problem- every 6 monthly brake and lights check. 12 monthly brake strip and bearing re-grease.

Just a thought- have you tried Safari? Down near Arborfield/ Blackbush- they used to get a lot of ex-MOD vehicles and trailers. http://www.safari-engineering.co.uk/ - I don't know if they are any good- just noticed them a few times when driving by.

Partly because it's the latest readily available version, so will be newer and, hopefully, in better condition. Partly also because I'm hoping the disk brakes cope better with heat build up on long mountain descents. I used to own a Desert Wolf trailer, which was fantastic, but I did manage to melt the sheath of the brake cables on long descents in the Alps, causing the brakes to stick on.

As for Safari Engineering, I know them of old and wouldn't buy anything from them unless it was an emergency Wink Darren

It is that one - and yes, it was just what I needed. However it hasn't been used as we then bought a caravan so haven't camped since Laughing

I've been storing it for free at a friend's stables but she is moving and I don't want to end up paying to store it somewhere when it's not getting any use. I have Censored all space at home or it would be kept there and used a lot more for household tasks.

More photos in my gallery. John

So what are the real differences between a wide track and a narrow track? Russell

The wide track is wide and the narrow track is, er, narrow. Essentially, the track matches the Land Rover of the day, so the wide tracks tracks match coil sprung vehicles, although for general use they're obviously interchangeable. Wide tracks also have drop down tailgates. Narrow tracks don't usually, although I notice that Johns' above has.

That's a shame. That's partly why I want one that's only 'lightly' modified, so I can use it as a general purpose trailer rather than have something too dedicated. We don't go camping very often as we have a caravan too, but it would be nice to have for the times when we do.

Your trailer does look nice - I particularly like the lid - but it's just not quite what I'm after. I'm intrigued though: what's the fan in the front and the timber partitions for? Darren

The guy I bought it off used to run a generator in there when he camped for 240v power Laughing so the fan was to cool that. I've dumped the wooden panels he had slotted in and removed the box so that the inside is opened up (save for the leisure battery) so it can be used for a general purpose trailer as well.

The tailgate is an addition put in when it was built along with the locks and everything else. John

Well, I've made a deal to buy a disc-braked wide track today, which I collect next Saturday. It's a bit scruffy and needs a coat of paint, but it's all complete and will make an excellent base to start from Very Happy Darren
