I know that Defender mpg has been done to death but please bear with me.
I read a fourum about hypermiling and was quite intrigued with what lengths people go to to get the best mpg out of their vehicles. I know that the defender is not a very economical vehicle and trying to improve mpg is not what the defender is all about BUT, was wondering if anyone was interested in doing an mpg challenge? How you drive is by far the biggest factor but there are others (just Google Hypermiling) So anybody up for the challenge? I'll start with mine. 2002 90 Td5 Hard top. 80,000 Miles Bp Standard Fuel 265/75/16 BFG A/T 30psi Front / 40psi Rear IRB Stage 2 Tune Discovery Transfer Box Best Round and about Mpg 36.2 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

NO not me anyway! And yes it has!
Hypermiling....Think I'd rather stay at home and contemplate the fluff extraction from ny navel with a pair of tweezers...Much more entertaining! I'm with Ibexman. I'm averaging about 26, commuting in mixed driving - town/A-roads?B Roads/ City. Could probably get much better on a long cruise but that would be exceptional anyway for my use, so 26 is what I go!
Considering the extra weight of my roll cage I don't think its so bad. One though is that the first 2 weeks I had the roof tent on there was no change! Still 26 ! Hopefully going off for a few days soon so will have it a bit more loaded, but different sorts of roads. Will be interesting to see how it goes. As for hypermiling - you can sometimes tell when a driver in front of you is ! Problem is one vehicles optimum fuel efficient speed can be completely different to other vehicles. So someone getting better fuel economy at the front of a queue might be screwing up everyone else's behind them! Just an observation but ScanGauge has really shown me just how much fuel I waste by driving badly. I'm definitely not going to hold anyone up but on the motorway or on my own on back roads I can get 10+ mpg more just by "taking it easy".
When I first got the Puma it didn't really occur to me to bother... Tell someone you love them today because life is short. But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing... |

Escorting Wide Loads and slow cranes is bad enough when its my job to sit there at 45-50 There is no way on earth i am going to do it when i dont have to. If everything is under control you are not going fast enough.

In Devon, there are plenty of slower things out there! And you don't have to drive very slowly to achieve good mpg.
Obviously i don't get that out of every tank. My average is about 29-32 at normal speeds, and lower obviously when i use the power. I was only curious if anyone had bettered that? seems not. 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

When I see people quoting some of the better figures (like over 32 mpg) I wonder if they are working it out correctly or if their milo / speedo is reading accurately or not!!

Now is that what certain modern car drivers practising on the UK motorways then?
Have noticed that there is more drivers on motorways driving at 50-55 mph in lane 1 and 2. These car drivers are a real PITA and should not be allowed on motorways if they can not keep up with the general flow of traffic. No I am not talking about cars which have top speeds of about 50 mph. Cars driven at 50 mph in lane 1 forcing HGV out into lane 2 to overtake them causes congestion and slow down the average flow of traffic. If they drive in lane 2 at 50 mph because lane 1 is the slow/lorry lane causing lorries and owing vehicles to have to undertake them cause congestion, adversely affects other vehicles mpg and increases danger to other road users! Ok, maybe my first post should have contained a disclaimer, i drive like any normal person, safely, and keeping up with the traffic. I posted what i have achieved around and about on quiet roads and mentioned that i googled hypermiling. My figure is the best i have achieved and wondered if any more was possible. I didn't want to offend people, i just found the article interesting. I completely agree that driving too slowly on the motorway or anywhere else in dangerous, hence i don't do it. 65-70 mph is i feel the best combination of speed, economy and what my ears will take on the motorway.
i didn't want to start a ranting match or annoy anyone, was just wondering what was possible. If anyone is interested here is a good mpg calculator http://www.mpg-calculator.co.uk/ 2002 90 Td5 Station Wagon 1990 Vogue SE Triumph Tiger Explorer 1200 Td5 90 Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic50767.html Tdi 110 Thread https://www.defender2.net/forum/topic69562.html RRC Thread http://www.defender2.net/forum/topic54492.html Instagram http://www.instagram.com/george_grafton |

A lot of good points raised here, I guess just ease off the gas when it suits and its safe to do so, and when there is no time imperative in your life. I think peoples' individual circumstances and uses are far too variable for this to be conclusive Grafty99 in terms of who gets best mpg - best for yourselves is what matters 2005 TD5 90 Hard Top

Just for the hell of it, I filled the tank and flogged the 90 down to Shrewsbury yesterday. Didn't break any speed limits, just drove it hard. I'm trying to get the worst fuel economy-just to make sure that driving like an old giffer really is worth the extra pennies

For God's sake don't worry about that - unless you're trying to We all own Land Rovers for different reasons and purposes - you've only to look at the Gallery for that I think you're idea is a good one if you're into that sort of thing but 20 members may disagree with me in the next half hour. It all depends on your point of view - everyone on here has one and isn't afraid to state it. Hoorah Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
