i'm sure my 1996 tdi sunroof (sprinkler system) has got a curve to it.

For some obscure reason all sunroofs fitted by LR appear to be curved, probably still a job lot from the mini Metro production line
That said I believe it is a golden rule that ALL LR sunroofs leak, certainly my Disco one would save up a nice hidden puddle that it would then deposit down the back of my neck on a tight left hand turn  |

After hopefully fixing the leaking Alpine window seal I decided to have another look at the sunroof.
Hopefully you can see the curve in the glass  Click image to enlarge Then thought, what would happen if the handle could be stopped from going too close to the glass A bit of foam and a bit of wood later... Mines got a curve looks like it should be fitted to a different car. I took the sunroof out a couple of weeks ago and gave the seal a good clean it doesn't leak.

I did consider removing the sunroof but most of the screws are rusted in place. So best they stay put!!!

Shouldn't need to undo the screws when you open the sunroof using the knob you can flick round a catch (hard to discribe) and it disconects the knob to allow you to lift the sunroof to near 90 degrees then lift it out.

Yes, as you lift towards 90 degrees they unhook. As for the rear windows I put high density foam between the 2 pains of glass to stop the rattling and used wide electrical type tape to seal them up. I can't upen them now but they don't rattle or leak just use the a/c if it gets really hot.

I shall have a look tomorrow or at the weekend at the lifting of the sun roof.

I had a look at the sunroof tonight and sussed how to make the roof open to 90 degrees. There is a little spring loaded metal clip that moves.
Anyways. Removed the sun roof and then looked at the seal and removed it. Cleaned up the old silicone and dried off the seal best I could. On refitting the seal, I noticed three ribs that run around the seal. Using hopefully the correct logic, I decided to fir the seal so the double rib fitted into the bottom slot and the top rib aligned with the top slot. Using a filler strip fitting tool I pushed the ribs into the bottom slot and worked around the seal then did the same with the top rib. On fitting the seal looks to be fitted upside down compared to how it was originally. I wonder if the seal had been removed in the past and put back in upside down? I now have a curve on the edge of the rubber that meets with the glass but curves inwards so hopefully a better seal. I also decided to run some Sikaflex around the seal just in case. When refitting the sunroof glass I spotted some water come out of the screw caps that hold the handle to the glass, so took the chance to remove the screws and reseal again with some Sikaflex. This made me wonder if the water wasn't getting past the glass but past the screws and dripping in ? 1999 Defender TD5 110 Regards John M0VAZ Econet Station 48 no clock |

Old post resurrection alert..!
Just been searching for answers how to remove the sun roof surround so I can seal it. However, my point is about the curved glass. On mine, when tightening the sun roof handle, it will initially stop when the glass reaches the rubber seal, but if the handle is tightened further it will pull the curved glass down to the rubber seal, even in the middle. Couplands I know this is for a Discovery and it is different but you could perhaps glean some information here. Not sure if you have drainage pipes as per the Discovery but they were very prone to blocking and perishing causing water ingress issues too. It may help perhaps?

@K9F, the Defender sunroof does not have drainpipes. Leakage is often caused by worn or dirty (algae) rubber seals or bad fitting of the seal in the roof. Cheers, Vincent
