I have steel mods like the one you want (without the small extra holes). Got them from Craddocks last month. Our blog - http://landytravels.com/

I got mine complete with BFG all terrains, fitted and balanced and I believe Craddocks/Paddocks will do the same, although if I know what I know now I'd probably have spent a little more and got a set of new take off boosts and tyres from Duckworths or the several which I saw at Billing, ho hum - free alloys on their way from 'uncle mick' though so not all bad, and will give me time to repaint the modulars for some muds/winter tyres. They are a nice looking combination although not as cheap as they were - tyres have gone up 40% in 4 years Should have been a bit more careful in the lakes when I managed to gash one up a bit (not gone flat yet though so probably ok, see what they say at MOT time!) Fekete- will check it out cheers!
DJ- why do you prefure alloys? Just a personal pref or have you got more practical reasonings? Last defender I had came with alloys, and they never looked right to me until they had my terrains on.. |

I can't say I prefer alloys, my 110 came with them as standard, my 90 came with some very tatty steel modulars with monster truck tires which I thought a bit over the top so swapped for a pig (dead in the freezer before you ask)
The alloys I'm thinking of fitting are a freebie, so rather than remove,, sandblast and repaint the steel modulars I thought it might be better in the short terms to try some free alloys, although it looks like I'll need spacers for them as well as they won't have the same offset. I think on the right vehicle the steel modulars look better and as they are wider offset look a bit chunkier as well. I'll probably paint up the steel ones at my leisure and have some more off road tyres on them for winter or trips when I know I'll need the extra traction (some trips/places will only allow mud tyres for some reason - probably to stop numpties like me getting too stuck all the time!) I get the thing about steel wheels being better for proper 'expedition' work where you could straighten them with a hammer if dented, whereas a standard type alloy would probably get cracked, but I guess it would have to be a pretty tough environment where you would break a wheel (and your spare) and get stuck on three wheels. I'd agree with the tyre choice, as soon as I fitted the BFG all terrains it just looked right (and performed much better) without looking too hardcore. Considering most of my expedition work is armchair based I think they are a good choice. From what I could see in Tanzania and Aus most /all had steel wheels and BFG's so I'd say there must be a reason for that. The answer is - go with what you like the look of most, all terrains on steel modulars are a top choice, I'm only going to change mine as its a no cost option, and I can always change them back if I don't like them. All taken in and understood DJ. I think the BF All terrain is the nicest tire I have driven a 4x4 on and the Mud terrain is definitely the choice for my civil but muddy farming and shooting activities in the winter. I love the aggressive stance the steel mods give and I think that you're right, the BFs are the most aggressive looking, non aggressive tire.
I take it you have friends like mine.. No cash changing hands, just manual labour, truck parts and most of all, large portions of frozen meat!! |
