Think I need a new radiator!
Im loosing coolant and on inspection my radiator is wet through when looking at it through the radiator grill.

So, assuming I need a new radiator, what are my options? A quick look at Rimmer Bros shows...

Genuine radiator £462
Genuine radiator & intercooler £544
Aftermarket version (probably Britpart!!) are about half price.

Should I go genuine, or aftermarket (buy cheap, buy twice!)?
Should I bite the bullet and get a modified intercooler from somewhere like Bell Auto Services?

What would you do?

Is the leak that bad? I had a bad one in a previous vehicle in my heater matrix which I cured with Radweld. This may be a cure perhaps....

If it were me....(obviously it's not) but my personal choice I would opt for an OEM radiator and combine it up with an Allisport intercooler. BAS or Alive would be my first ports of call. If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Depends what you've got around you, but there are companies out there that will re-core radiators for a lot less than a new one. Darren

The aftermarket ones are fine. Before you order one though, ring around a few places and see what Allmakes and Bearmach are offering before looking at Britpart. Then ask the person on the phone if there has been any recent issues with them as there may be a bad batch in circulation.

what exactly is re-coring. Ive noticed lots of the very fine fins (dont know what they are called) are damaged/missing.

Essentially, replacing everything between the top and bottom tanks. You can even have them re-cored with a denser matrix to improve cooling for hot running engines. Darren

buy cheap - buy twice

if you can spare the time, get it recored

I put a new OEM one in my 300tdi earlier this year, as I expected, no problems

There's also an oil pipe that needs to be replaced at the same time I seem to remember

Fitted a Britpart radiator to the 200 tdi some years ago and it is not a 100% straight forward fit. Was unable to use the original rubber washers that fit beneath it as then it sat too high. After a lot of messing around I finally used the rubber washers that come with the airfilters for the 200 tdi and got a tolerable fit. Luckily I was in an independents yard at the time so I had access to a lot of discarded airfilter washers! Next radiator I fit will be genuine! 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Mine had same problem very recently.
I replaced mine with a brand new alloy core one of ebay for £78, comes with 2 year warranty.
I did need the thread converters for the oil pipes but that wasn’t too much drama.
Just lifted out old one, dropped in new one, purged air and off we went.
(I say it like it was a pleasurable job, it was raining hard and we had to get it done that day. But it was a very simple job. Take the time to clean your intercooler too, it is worth doing)

Did it before an overland around the alps and it came back splattered with bugs but otherwise good as new with no dramas.

Just an option.

Thanks for the replies Thumbs Up

The leak got quite bad and I was loosing lots of water so I had to take it into my local indie garage who put a Bripart radiator on Big Cry Not my first choice but I needed my landie later that day so I had no choice. They claim not to have had any problems with britpart radiators, time will tell.

I got my original one back so I can get it re-cored for future use. I just need to find somewhere local that can do this. Any ideas?

Cheers Thumbs Up
