I went through a similar process with a 300tdi Discovery a few years ago that I'd owned for five years. It ran well and had been meticulously serviced, but had covered over 140k miles. I was using it for overland trips and wanted to maintain reliability by carrying out 'preventative maintenance'. After umm-ing and ah-ing about how far to go, I settled on replacing all of the hoses, the fuel lift pump and the water pump, which are all relatively cheap. I also cleaned the intercooler with paraffin, which was very worthwhile.
I reasoned that most other things were either unlikely to fail catastrophically, i.e. you get some warning before they do, or we're just too expensive to replace 'just in case' such as the injection pump. On a Defender, regular maintenance should also include cleaning the teat on the heater intake duct Darren 110 USW BUILD THREAD - EXPEDITION TRAILER - 200tdi 90 BUILD THREAD - SANKEY TRAILER - IG@landroveranorak "You came in that thing?
