seem to remember one of the LRO team fitted one to their 110 (Neil Watterson's?) probably at least a couple of years back - might be worth sending them an email

I think there are a lot of folk driving Land Rovers with trailers that really should have a tacho that don't
I don't know whether I am being worried about nothing. Trouble is if I do need one fines for this sort of thing can be big. I bet a lot of people are running without one who tow trailers for market stalls, car boot burger trailers, deliveries for engineering firms, builders carrying stuff and so on. This seems to be a bit of a fuzzy subject with not much information, in other words people talk about having to have one fitted but not many people actually do have one in their Landy. There are exemptions like carrying plant for work in the local area, farmers within 50km of their farm and utility companies and so on. Thanks for the replies so far 110 Hard top |

Hi,
yes as you say quite a few landrovers should really have tacho. fitted. Friends of mine started a business hauling boats across the country (and subsequently the continent) on a long trailer. after hearing of someone who was stopped by police and told they could not continue the trip towing, quickly had tachos fitted before it happened to them. ( not landrover though silly people, so can't help with fitting instructions). But most definetely if you are towing large loads for hire or reward you need a tacho! 1981 series 3 swb gone 1986 v8 110 station wagon current 2009 puma 110 xs utility station wagon latest addition |

All Tachographs have to be calibrated and "sealed" by a DOT approved facility. I would not reccomend the second hand ebay route.
I used to own a transport company and used several Land Rovers for Towing and they where excempt from Tachograph regulation because they where known as a "Dual Purpose" vehicle in transport law, however I beleive the law has changed recently and if the train weight, i.e. Vehicle and trailer weight is greater than 3500 KG you may require a Tachograph and possibly an operators license. I would suggest you speak with your local department of transport office for advice. Cradge. Richard Either a 90, 110 or 130. Discovery 5 |

I have had my 2008 Defender fitted with one last week, too many VOSA vans about!
Simple fitment on the front of the cubby box and took a day for it to be fitted, £900 + vat then drivers card at £38 company card another £38 and to top it off a download key at £185 But with upto a £5000 fine for not fitting one then £2000 for not complying to drivers hours what do you do? |

Just stay with in a 50m radius of your home address, no need for a tacho!

Is that 50m (meters) or 50 M (Miles)?
How do the police see if it is a personal transport or for hire? Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

Miles! Can go as far as you like if its personal and you like driving a long way with heavy loads behind you, Hire & Reward is down to the Police to prove (innocent untill proven guilty remember) but i would hazard a guess a sign written van & trailer for "Bob the builder" towing his 2.2 ton digger is a bit of a giveaway! |

Yes but if you are a gardener and have a trailler from a rental company and a digger from a rental company, you could do some digging in your grandmothers garden or being paid for it.
In The Netherlands we have the same discussion on this subject but here is the rule: If the car is a commercial version you have to have a tachograph but not if it is a personal car. So a company can have a normal non commercial defender and the driver doesn't need a tacho and no problems with driving hours etc. Roel 1984 90 2.5 na Diesel - RR V8 (1994-2001) 1997 Camel Trophy Discovery 300TDI (2001-2009) 2005 G4 Discovery III 4.4 V8 (2008-2018) It's gone but it still hurts. 2003 90 Td5 (2009-now) |

I think it 50 Km rather than miles.
As for the builder he will be fine if he uses the digger as parts of his tooling as tools are exempt, now if he delivers the digger to hire it out it different! One point to rember is that the police can soon find out what business you are in, so if stopped with a scrap landy on the back (for our business) and I tell them I am a dentist they have the powers to find out!
