Coolant level
Has anyone had any issues with their coolant level in the puma TDCi 2.4, I have just noticed that my coolant is very low and the puma hasn't done 14,000 miles yet. It had its first service or 12,000 mile service back in December and only noticed the low coolant today and I could also smell coolant that's what drew my attention.

Sounds like you may have a leak. Fortunately, the OAT coolant leaves a pink deposit when it leaks, so take a look around.

Don't panic just yet David
There have been similar queries on this over the past year and it seems that most of the time its simply the filler/expansion tank cap thats the problem. If you unscrew it and find that the plastic threads are wet then its most certainly the culprit. Mine is similar - everytime I top it up it soon goes down again but seems to stop and settle at about 1cm below the 'full' indicator so a new cap will be fitted next service

Sounds exactly like mine.....

After numerous tests for headgasket leaks etc, etc the dealers put the header tank and cap on a pressure test and found that the cap valve opened at 1.19bar where it should only open at 1.4 bar. New cap and all is normal now........

BTW, there is an alarming amount of blown headgaskets on these 2.4's so rather make sure and demand they do a proper pressure test as well as a coolant chemical analysis!!!!!!

Today I bought new cap at dealers and installed it. Will see if there is a difference on my 2.4

Hi there,

what can be best done to monitor the coolant level in the expansion reservoir ?
A low-level warning is quite useful I think

There is one solution where a bleeding cap is replaced. I have read about concern that it might only give alarm when the water pump is low on water - which may be rather late.

Does anybody know about a different cap for the expansion tank with a sensor in it - as for the RRC with plastic expansion tank ?

This is a nice DIY-idea: http://www.mdocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=38102

I wonder if this could work and be worthe the effort ?

(sorry for the small pic, donīt know what went wrong)
(basically it is a connection between the pipe at the bottom of the tank and the bleeding pipe which is above coolant level. The coolant level in that connection will have the same level as the tank and could carry a sensor)

I had a similar problem a year or two back. Turned out that the cap needed replacing, but the new cap and increased pressure then caused the water pump shaft seal to start weeping, so new pump fitted. Been ok since.

To check the level I dip the header with a pencil because I can't see the level in the "translucent" tank unless I backlight with a torch.

My problem has been that the big coolant hose that comes from the back of the water pump and goes to somewhere to the block was punctured by a jubilee clip. Common problem. The dealers have that hose in stock. (Itīs a 2.2).
The leak gradually got worse but I didnīt notice, because the car was half a year old and, ok, I didnīt check it due to the youth. She drove absolutly faultless. No overheating, no power loss, heating was ok although a bit weak for what all say about the Pumaīs heating power. But I came from SIII/RRC so what do I know.
When I noticed there was about 1litre missing. If topped up, it would immediately loose it again. As I never witnessed puddles under the car before, the leak must have been there for a longer time. It was March and I remember those times were pretty cold. That could have masked a reduced cooling capability.

Anyways, that is my story Smile And I am keen after an low-level alarm. Just checking at the gas station is not enough.
