Classic Cars - Ford Capri V8 Perana.
With Le Mans recently followed by Classic Le Mans we have been loading and offloading some very expensive and fanciable cars of late on the cross-Channel run to Cherbourg and St Malo.
Viewing Ferraris and Porsches and just about every other marque of expensive car became mundane. However early yesterday morning there was a 'growling' from car deck 2 and this came into view. There weren't many made and they were made for the Republic of Africa market and I believe only 200 or so were produced. Having been born in the 60s Ford Capris have and will always endear themselves to me. The one I saw was original and in exactly the same format, colour and decals and it was mint condition and a V8 beast. Details below picture.

The basic ingredients of the Perana V8 are quite straightforward:

Capri body and 5‑litre Mustang base V8 engine (as used in the Fairlane ) are supplied by Ford South Africa, with some special features to BG specification: 4‑barrel Holley carburettor with aluminium high riser inlet manifold, 360‑degree dry element air cleaner (all which form part of the Ford Stage 1 "Muscle Power” options), plus Stage 2 cam‑shaft (either hydraulic or Boss solid lifter) and stronger valve springs. This increases engine range from 4 600 to 5 800 rpm, and output from 156 to 210 kilowatts – almost exactly one‑third more. Gearbox is a four‑speed Mustang close‑ratio unit with floor shift, and rear axle is a Borg‑Warner XB limited‑slip. Imagine a smooth‑handling, quiet-running and low‑slung car that will sprint evenly from 20 km/h (idling speed) to 200 km/h in top gear, that will accelerate with ease from 0‑100 km/h inside 7 seconds, and which has a 50 percent reserve of power at 150 km/h ‑‑

Closest I got was a Mk2 1600 M reg Capri with a power bulge bonnet. They like the Puma bonnets were getting knicked at the time for the same reason. Shocked

I can fully understand now why Zag gave up his Defender! I would too if the Capri I saw was an affordable option. Whistle If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

I liked the RS3100 Capri - and like land rovers, they didn't go around corners very well either

i remember watching The Professionals as a kid and thinking their late model " cappa" was the mutts.

Was it a 2.8 (or has that figure come from somewhere else in the old grey matter?)

The original cars were TR7's supplied by B/L but they kept wanting them back mid way through shoots to give to other companies, so they switched to Ford. 2.4 90 XS

They (Republic of S.A.) also had a Perana Mk 1 Granada just like the Sweeney one! I looked at one in a showroom in Essex not long ago for £10,000 Mr. Green

So, he went through a hedge, whilst you were going through a bush?
