2008 Defender 110 Puma 2.4 SW Zambezi Silver
Blown Engine
Hi all. Hope someone can give some clarity. My Defender burned two pistons only 60 000km on the clock. I suspected bad fuel quality because I used the vehicle in Zambia and Tanzania. Others told me it was because the engine was tuned. I am suspecting it was because of a leak on the air intake manifold.Had to drive about 5000km with the leak pulling a trailer and fully loaded roof rack. Can this be the real cause of the engine failure?? Really want to tune the new motor again but am a bit scared. Thanks. On a quite night in Africa you can hear the sound of rusting Land Cruisers

Depends rather on who tuned it/what they did, doesn't it?
Was it a tuning box or a proper remap from a reputable company? Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Hmm, I don't see how a leak in the air intake manifold would cause and engine to implode - if anything the ECU would have reduced power to save the engine.

I'm tending towards fuel leak into the cylinders - yours would not be the first Puma to which this has happened. --

Only a gasoline engine can have problems with air leak from inlet manifold (lean combustion = detonation).

In a comon rail diesel engine the problems can be generate from:
1. dripping injectors
2. incorrect injection timing

It could have be caused by many causes, water in fuel, bad fuel, over temp working it hard (though not likley if the sensors are correct) I dont think tuning would have a lot to do with it unless it was tuned to the hilt and you have works it to death.

My 2.2 engine is nearly out ready for a 3.2 and it runs perfect at only 12 miles and 19 days from build lol Smile

my truck has been tuned since being 12 months old and personally i would say its tuned to its limit with a bigger turbo and all and i have had no issue so i wouldnt put it down to tuning

I think it's how it's "tuned" that might be the issue. I tried a tuning box once and I swear if I'd kept using it, something would have blown up Shocked
That being said, I guess a bad tun(ing box) would be noticeable from the outset... Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

Hi All thanks for the feedback.

@dgardel I had a re map from a reliable company in SA that is strongly recommended by a 4x4 Forum.This map was done in Jan 2009. Then change to a piggy back system in Oct 2011 when I arrived back in SA. The company who installed this is Steves Auto Clinic also a well known company in SA. Two weeks later the motor went thus I am suspecting their product and a lot of people complain about their product. Thus make it difficult to pinpoint which product might have caused the problem.

@naks the vehicle did smoke a lot uphill but thought this was due to bad fuel I had to buy in Malawi. The temp gauge also went up all of a sudden and loss of power this happened about three times. What is the cause of fuel leaking into the cylinder?Because Bosch tested the injectors before I pulled the engine out.

@Pete yes many things could have caused the engine failure. But I am a bit skeptical about the the tuning quality in the South African market. I spoke to Naks and he is very happy with your product as well as many members on this forum.Might give you a call once my mind is made up.

why did you change to a piggyback unit if you had already had it tuned properly ?

From experience, not sure how the fuel is in TZ, but there was cases of fuel contamination in Kenya when the fuel was 'watered down' with kerosene. The newer imported Jap vehicles suffered from engine failures due to this.

Perhaps a combination of fuel and tuning?
