Once there out of the vat system that's that. Personally it's a better selling point

Depends it your vat registered or not? If you are you can claim it back, if your not you can't and you cannot add it when you sell it on.

This is news to me. So I buy a car say for £15k plus vat. I'm not VAT registered and so pay £18k total. If I then come to see it a week later for example I can't sell it for £18k and they claim the 3k back from the VAT man? I'd just have to sell it for £15kplus VAT and only get £15k? 1951 80" S1 2.0

As far as I see it you have to pay the price inc vat and if not vat reg can't claim it back, but you can sell it for what ever you want just won't be able to add vat to it
If you can get some one to pay more than the price you payed inc vat you keep all of it People will pay what ever they think it's worth to them Good luck It's good to be back from the dark side DC110 -2012 Black with black hood and black x-tech FFRR 4.2 vogue Renault traffic auto PT crusier convertible Laika x700 Motorhome |

Once the vehicle has been sold to a non vat registered person/business, the vehicle then loses it Vat qualifying status,, IE,, if you pay £18000 from a Vat registered business (They will give you a Vat invoice of £15,000 + £3000 vat) and can not claim it back through your Vat registered business, Then when you want to sell it,, there will be no vat to be paid or can be reclaimed
You can not sell it for 15k plus Vat, if not Vat registered California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |

you can advertise it for 18k..(15+) but a business will not buy it due to not being able to claim the 3k back. the man on the street won't wan't to pay vat(although they always do) so may come with a better price

To a normal man on the street, what's the difference between 15K+vat or £18k? I must be missing something but I don't get why you say the man on the street won't want to pay vat. |

Most things that you buy from a retailer include VAT, ie a set of screwdrivers from Halfords costing £12 is in fact £10 + £2 (20%) VAT - We all have to pay that VAT wether you are a private individual or a business.
However, if a business (that is VAT registered) is buying those screwdrivers then they are able to claim the VAT back and effectively only pay £10 - as a private individual you are not VAT registered so you pay £12 end of story. If that business were to then resell those screwdrivers then they would need to charge VAT on the screwdrivers and that VAT will need to be paid to the VAT office. So, if you buy a vehicle from a VAT registered business for £15,000 + VAT then you have to pay £18,000. If a business bought that same vehicle they would also pay £18,000 but they could then claim the VAT back - if they then go on to sell it they would need to charge VAT on the sale that they then pay to the VAT office .... |

It also follows that the price to buy from a private individual or business should be the same (assuming the scenario at the bottom hasn't occured):
Private individual buys Land Rover for £15,000 + VAT = £18,000 Company buys Land Rover for £15,000 + VAT = £18,000 - Claims back £3000 = £15,000 Both then want to sell the next day and get there money back: Private individual sells Land Rover for what it cost him = £18,000 Company sells Land Rover for what it cost them £15,000 they then have to add VAT + £3000 = £18,000 What you don't want to do as a business is buy from the individual at £18,000 as you can't claim the VAT back AND when you come to sell you still have to add the VAT, so selling next day would be £18,000 + VAT = £21,600 ..... |

Not quire right Matt In the above case, the vehicle will becomes a margin vehicle IE, any profit over what you bought it for it for would inc 20% vat eg if sold for £18250. a £250 "profit". the vat man has £41.67 out of the deal California F1, 75th 110 "Kermit", 50th Ann V8, 90 V8 Hybrid, 55 Series 1 Main Brian James Trailer Dealer for South West UK |
