I think that at the end of the day, having a good farrier, a vet with knowledge on what they're treating(no disrespect to vets but to have any confidence in your vet you need to know that they do indeed know about horses as opposed to cats and dogs), Keep a close eye on their weight, keep sugar intake low and give them space to move freely, keeping them confined in a stable slows down the breakdown of the sugars produced naturally. Laminitis is linked to Cushings and the like, just like Land Rovers, if it's not one thing it's another that comes along to empty the wallet and increase the stress levels Rolling Eyes

^^^Absolutely, a good farrier and vet are worth hanging onto. I also hold great store by what some of the old horsemen [the old boys who worked horses on the land] did to keep their animals in good order but there aren't many of them around anymore. It's amazing what can trigger an attack of laminitis, the hay we get is really good stuff but we tend to soak it well before feeding it to our our natives, the others usually get a mix of hay and oat straw but we'll soak their hay too when the grass flushes. Steve.

It's hard to get many "modern" horse and pony owners to realise that the native breeds of our country are generally good doers, they usually come from the least favourable areas(Dartmoor, Exmoor, Welsh Mountain etc. etc.) Their natural habitat does not include paddocks with lush grasses such as IRG and the like, they'll thrive on a few old manky sedges and scraping whatever they can off the exposed rocks! I should like to see a few of these "Friends of the RSPCA" trying to put rugs on a pony on the Fells Mr. Green

Good stockmanship is becoming a dying skill as people are getting further away from the nitty gritty of the real countryside.

Yay a horse thread =) *mad horse freak* guilty....

My nag is called Henry, he looks like a Henry I think! 17 years young 11 years with me! He's a moody 14.2hh Welsh sec D who always gets his way and suffers with weight gain and hay fever and terrible personality changes. We argue all the time but I wouldn't trade him for anything!

He does love reading the walls...

That looks some cracking country in the top picture, must admit I haven't ridden to hounds since Blair stuck his foot in it. Mainly through moving to a different county and partly through protest.

and as with all real irish cobs, dont ask how old as nobody knows Laughing

Bought the first mare and it came with the young one for free (nobody knew that moment) Whistle

Both mares have a long history together which involved a wagon trip to spain from belgium with a complete family. The owner bought them directly in ireland. Unfortunately their trip was abruptly stopped in middle of france when one of the children got diagnosed with cancer. Owner sold horses and wagon in france but over a couple of merchants the mares ended up back in belgium.

They are both bombproof but hard explosive characters. Which is fun, as not expected from a 'fat pony'

Riding them as wel as driving. That is when time permits.... which it didn't... in the past 4 years :x
