Front Centre Seat in a TD5 - Legal!?
Can you put a front centre seat in all TD5's - I need a pick up/hard top Defender that can carry me and both kids, it's cheaper than sticking a seat in the back!

I trying to avoid going down the white van route Big Cry My Series is OK for work around town but going down to Chichester regularly to the boat is pushing it a bit so it would be better to upgrade - wonder if the wife can tell the difference between a TD5 and a Series Whistle

I would imagine it's a yes. BUT I couldn't guarantee it for you so not much help really. Only trouble is it's not a very nice experience for who ever is using said centre seat. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

It would indeed. It maybe cheaper but I don't think you'd like it in the front. ⭐️⭐️God Bless the USA 🇬🇧🇺🇸 ⭐️⭐️

On a Series LR, the front centre seat was always known as the "gelding" seat. Not much fun indeed! 1970 Series 2A 88"

Interesting....With all the extra seat fitments going on, what are the implications for insurance should an individual be injured in one of the said seats? Anybody know for sure? If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Well surely if they fitted them as standard then they should be legal? my old Td5 110 had one fitted. never used though, removed for a cubby box.

The seatbelt itself was connected to the seat frame. so no other bracketry to be fitted.

If it has a bulkhead, you can put a 3point belt in, but it's not great for big kids.

It's only for a 5 year old so comfort not an issue. I have a raised seat belt bar for the Series where they sit in the front at the moment so may need something similar for a TD5 - you can buy them for older Defenders from Exmoor Trim I think!

Kids not happy about going back to school in the old 109 Shocked They did it for nearly 3 years but have got used to too much comfort in the TDCi - Getting them back in a dripping wet, freezing cold 109 will toughen them up Rolling with laughter

Mal insurance is OK on models when it was legal at the time (The bar I have is an OE optional extra for Series 3's and Defender 90's I'm just not sure when they were not allowed, probably when the centre seat stopped being an option maybe around 2006 when the side seats were also made illegal.

Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Mr. Green

My td5 had one in when I bought it, with a lap belt. In fact it's sat on a shelf here if it's any use to you! [:O|===|O:] 2001 110 TD5 Doublecab

If you're going to trade up from your Series to a TD5, why not take your existing mounting bar with you? That part of the body won't have changed.

As for the legality, TD5's came out of the factory with centre seats, so I can't see any reason why not. You may even find that you're buying one with a seat already fitted. Frankly, I'd be more concerned about head restrain for your five year old as his booster seat ( you are using one, aren't you?) will raise him up well above the back of a regular centre seat. Darren

Fitted it behind the seat where static lap belt would mount. 993 Varioram - Guards Red
