You should be able to see the striker plate on the frame. Can you get a thin screwdriver or the like in there to see if you can get the catch to release ?

This happened to my old 300tdi 90. Not sure what the fix was as some toerag knicked it before I fixed the problem

Go fishing with a length of wire to lift the lever that the door catch is supposed to be attached to, when doing it keep some pressure on the door from the outside to make the unlatching a little easier. Have a look at pictures of the lock on rave or the Haynes book of lies to give you an idea where you're aiming for.
