Friends - we have been searching without success for a few weeks, looking to hire a motorhome for a few days week commencing 2nd July.
We're thinking of buying one (suits our other hobbies of Sea Kayaking and Mountain Biking), but want to do a couple of hires thru the summer with a view to purchasing one later in the year (hoping 2nd hand prices subside when we head to the darker months). Ideally in Inverness area. 2 berths needed, but we like a bit of space (i.e. a motorhome, not a camper van) decent bathroom facilities (not a wet room) Perfection would include some sort of roof mechanism where I can attach kayaks (using my kari-tek if possible), and maybe even a bike rack. I know this is a long shot...but someone may know of something we haven't found yet! Thanks for reading. Cheers Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

There's Malcolms Motorhomes way down in Stoke, I know that's not what you want, but it's a last resort

Slightly closer to home than Stoke there is Harrogate Motorhomes
http://harrogatemotorhomes.co.uk/ They don't deliver over 10 miles from base but will pick up from Leeds/Bradford airport or Harrogate train station Their website gives a good idea of what is available/included, costs, etc. even if they are too far away. |

As well as a ridiculous distance away, I just read he stopped hiring and only does sales. My bad

Thanks for the suggestions guys, the Harrogate one looks just like what we want (nice vans, fair prices) but it's just a bit too far away (200 miles South of Edinburgh would add 800 miles of travelling...200 miles to pick it up, 200 miles bavck to Scotland, then same again to return it...).
Wish I could find something like the Harrogate one nearer home Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

Thanks, roamingman!
I tried FOS already...one near Ballindalloch is 6-berth and 7m long...huge (it's also an old van and quite expensive IMHO), there's a lovely suitable one in Aberdeen but that's a long drive (and it doesn't have a roofrack), there's also a nice one in Alloa, but again no roof rack. Many of the privateers are only doing week-long hires because it's heading into school holiday season (we only want 3-4 days). The Harrogate one had the right size, and a good price, and availability (all good ) no roofrack tho. We may need to leave the sea kayaks behind... I must say, parking a motorhome at one of the idyllic Scottish beaches (next to pub!) and launching the 'Yak seems ideal. Plockton, Glenuig, Stien, Gairloch, Arisaig, Applecross...all have car parks next to good launch spots and next to wonderful pubs where you can never book accommodation at short notice. If we dunk in the sea we can have a shower, get a warm cuppa after a long paddle... etc etc... couple of borrowed pics Click image to enlarge I may well just buy one later in the year, and rent it out via FOS or similar to balance the books a bit.. Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's) |

I seem to remember seeing a number of hire motorhomes coming from the Glasgow direction when I was returning from the Highlands a couple of years ago.
Can't remember exactly where but quite near to Glasgow and must have coincided with either a train or flight as there were a number all quite close together on the road. Probably not a lot of help but I remember thinking that it might be a nice idea to do that one holiday. Thanks, Buzz - I think that may be this one: http://www.focusvehiclerental.co.uk/motorhomes.htm ...good prices for a whole week, but at this time of year they won't do short (2-4 day) hires (well, they will, but they still charge the rental for a whole week!!! ) They don't have roofracks, and also only have small ones available (campervan rather than motorhome) There's a wide variance in t's & c's...most of them have HUGE deposits, and HUGE insurance excesses...
