In which case, how the hell do you own a 2011 110 and a boat just by telling people where to stick their Geraniums ????? Mr. Green

Yes I think your right. Go back to my 109 as a daily drive, only costs £100 to insure with no tax. Sell the Defender to put the money into a boat (lose less money on it than a Defender) and sell my current boat to pay off the debt. I could just sell my boat to pay off the debt ,but I am losing on the Defender and it's only being used for getting from A-B locally whereas the 109 will do that and having a boat for me is what life is about and the family enjoy going out also Very Happy With about 5k left over i start doing up the house or put it into a TDi eventually Very Happy

Rolling with laughter I couldn't, I spent 20 odd years buying and selling classic/old cars and saving up to buy a nice boat or classic car. I bought the Defender off the back of making a 10K profit on the previous sale.

Bought for 17K sold for 27K Very Happy

I expect the majority of members here could save up £300 plus each month for toys, we will never be in that position so I like to keep my funds tied up in something and have fun with it otherwise it only gets frittered away. You only live once and like most I like to fulfill challenges/experiences. When you look back on your life you want to be content that you have used the time well and achieved your goals. The family also gets a lot from my hobbies, my wife would never have sailed along the south coast, travelled so much especially on the back of a bike Shocked , raced at Goodwood/Castle coombe etc, pot holed, climbed bla bla.

Well I shall sleep on the idea and dream about this in the meantime Bow down

Best time to sell the Defender for me is after the summer :blub:

When I really think about the huge amount of money we are going to spend to go off to Australia for a few months it is rather scary and if we were being all sensible we'd invest the money in property instead.

But owning property won't give us a 'life experience' to treasure in the future like the trip will.

Then again, we don't buy new cars every few years and don't have fancy holidays abroad every summer. Few years small cheap mortgage to pay off and that's it debt wise. Don't have kids so no extra mouths to feed / cloth /educate, etc. As far as sensible things like pensions are concerned, we have a collection of small pension pots each, but those won't see us being able to have anything like the same retirement lifestyle as our parents are having. So going to do some 'living' now while we have health and money!

Thumbs Up

your wheeling and dealing has got you an asset. your house is an asset aswell. you need to get taht in order which will increase its value and allow you to move up/down/sideways as you wish.

the 110 and boat would go. i'd sort the house, get a job, knuckle down for a the rest of the year. then sell up, buy a cheaper house in cornwall get a tidy tdi and your dream boat.

I often question my 110's purchase as i don't drive it much! and i fancy a new transporter van....@ 34k Big Cry

i have recently sold my 1979 gp 200 as well as my old td5 and a few other bits. this is funding my house renovations and with a bit of luck a house sale later this year. Then we'll be looking for our 40 acres and starting down the small holding route. The 110 will come into play there

Zag, I was in a similar position to you, with more money tied up in my 110 than I could justify. Sold it on, bought a sensible car for the commute and a project 90. A scruffier land rover is not as nice in some ways of course, but I don't mind what happens to it so much, I do more offroading as I care less about the paint, and it's a nice ongoing source of jobs.

Go for it, the landy is for using not looking at! (not sure about all this boat malarkey though!)

Chris,

Think seriously before making any decision and consider your options;

Do you need another boat? You have one already?

Would you really want to go back to the 109 as everyday transport - is it going to be reliable enough, comfy enough now that you have got used to a Puma? What would you use for family trips towing the boat / going away with all the camping stuff etc?

You spent months agonising over buying a Puma - and wanted one to keep long term. Has that really changed?

What is the main priority? If it is to clear some debts and get the kitchen sorted then the last thing you should be thinking about is another boat.

Maybe look at other options - full time job? Sell the 109, sell the boat, get the wife an evening job, sell a child ...

When I bought my house after renting for a few years following my divorce I sold my 07 Puma to raise some extra cash and always regretted it. With hindsight maybe I should have just upped the mortgage a bit and kept it as I never got attached to the Golf I replaced it with even though it had 170bhp and always did 45mpg - it just wasn't 'me'.

If after looking at every option rationally you decide to sell it then do so, but I bet you'd regret it in a month or two and be posting about looking for a new one ... Laughing John

Hat off to you Zag,

I have to agree with the previous post from JSG...You did a phenominal amount of soul-searching and investigation prior to committing to buying your Puma and buy it you did!!! Personally I think it a shame to possibly throw it away on a whim! Thumbs Up

Many moons ago I has a perfect 1970 Ducati 900ss which I sold to raise an extra £3500 for a mortgage with my wife's encouragement, I did this on the basis that once settled I would 'buy another' motorcycle. It was another 12 years later before I got where I was previously.

The rest is history, in order of priority....first house went, lost Zippo lighter given to me by Dutch Air Force, Barnaby my boxer died and yes the ex-wife has gone too.

Sell the wife and kids (children are like rats and cockroaches, they would survive a nuclear holocaust) keep the Puma and think about it for a few years..... If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Sorry to hear that GREENI but maybe your not Shocked

It's a tricky one which comes down to how best to preserve my money, which is the boat as it doesn't depreciate and what will give more pleasure to me and the family which again is the boat. We still have the SAAB for towing, long trips etc and an 8K Defender say will do what the TDCi will do for me.

I always yearned for a new Defender but I have sort of been their and done it and there is a lot of money tied up in it when an 8K one will do the same job. I would have the same enthusiasm for a TDi/Td5. At the moment I have only lost 2-3K on it as I got it for 28K but another year will see it drop by the same again Shocked

I would get a lot more pleasure/fun out of the larger boat whereas there is little difference between a TDi and TDCi for me, in fact what I need for work is a 110 Hard Top. I probably won't do anything until after the summer so have plenty of time to mull it over but if someone offered me £25,500 for a 2011, 6000 mile 2.4 XS I would take it Whistle

TOO TRUE!!!!

Zag, asking for personal advice on a Land Rover forum will get you about as much consenus as asking what is the best LR colour or wheel and tyre combination.

Reducing debt and living within your means is in general sensible advice.

A couple of points to bear in mind, you are in your mid 40's going full time back into gardening how long can you do it for?

Personally I started to slow down physically in early 50's. The old joints are beginning to play up and anyone doing physical work especially in cold and wet can expect to slow up in 50's onwards.

Yes having that trip of a lifetime/dream boat or car is nice BUT quality of life, especially with wife and kids is important.

So Censored off from the computer for a few days, go for some nice long solo walks/sailing trips and let the wind and peace, views etc work their magic.

Then do the same with wife/good friend and talk about the options and see what solutions come out of the woodwork.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

Brendan.

PS If it helps at all I will up my offer by another £5! Laughing
