The turbo actuator arm seems stuck fast on my TD5. With the engine shut down, I can't move it at all by hand. Is this how it should be?
It seems to be down on power at low revs, takes off like a Quattro when it hits higher revs. 2021 Defender 110 X-Dynamic HSE D300 MHEV 1966 S2a 109 aka Betsy |

If has no power, then suddenly get a surge of power, that is normaly signs of failed MAF

Have a look at this video from IRB Developments on how to check your actuator is free. |

Clamp some mole grips onto the shaft of the turbo wastegate actuator rod, and using the palm of your hand, push against the mole grips, away from the actuator diaphragm housing, and the wastegate should open, then close under spring pressure. The movement should be smooth throughout the stroke.
If it feels notchy, or it sticks, then spray some wd40 onto the pivot, where the shaft goes into the turbine housing on the exhaust side, then work the actuator rod back and forth with the mole grips until it feels free through its entire stroke. As previously mentioned, it sounds a bit like the MAF sensor may be faulty, causing it to feel flat below 2000 rpm. |
