EML MOT Issue
Since all the MOT changes in April will a lit engine management light have any effect on the MOT? I'm meant to be taking Big Black for it's first MOT on Saturday, and typically the little orange light of doom has lit up, and I have no time to take it to the dealers before the weekend. I've had a check under the bonnet, everythings still connected, EGR valve still does its chukka chukka and it still drives perfectly(ish).

I've had a look around the internet and have found lots of conflicting info.

Firstly I would suggest you try giving it a good blast along a few miles of dual carriageway. I found with mine this turned mine off. roughly 60mph will do with good progress certainly nothing more than that I wouldn't imagine. Other than that you are right the amber warning light can fail an MOT but it will be highly likely that it isn't a true fault so chance are they may decide just to remove it for you electronically (checked of course first) I am no expert and someone with more knowledge may better advise you but I have gave you as much info that I can suggest. Lorryman100 (Brian) on here is very good at the electronics side and fault codes ect Thumbs Up

Depends on what fault is flagged. If it is an airbag fault it is sure to fail but as Pumas don't have airbags that need not concern you. This is from out car test.
Ensure the malfunction indicators for Airbags, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) and Electronic Braking System (EBS) / Anti-Lock
Braking System (ABS) and Parking Brake malfunction indicator are in working order.

1 Not working or indicates a defect in the relevant system

I put my other car (I won't mention what it is to prevent embarrassment, but it is a 4x4 diesel) through an MOT last week with the EML showing as the EGR is stuck. There were no fails or recommendations on the report.

I'm sure you'll be fine.......

Done about 100 miles today Kona, about 80 of which was on the motorway between 60 and 70. Like you I thought it might possibly clear it as it's not had a decent run in a few weeks, but no joy.

I have no ABS or traction control or any other gubbins like that Spud, so alls ok there, and the parking brake light lights up and goes out as it should.

Thats reassuring Delskinz, I did think it may be EGR valve related, although it still *sounds* to be working fine, being a Defender it could be anything though eh...?

Because it's lit up does that mean there's something wrong? Or something has been wrong? I understood that if there was no fault after three engine starts it'd clear, although it's still lit up...

This Land Rover certainly picks it's moments to throw it's strops!

Still wait and see though. Leave it for today and see tomorrow on start up. If not then I would bet it goes of either that or sometime soon. If it doesn't with in a week half a week and just stays on then there is certainly an issue. Likely MAF sensor or EGR as you mention. Either part isn't shockingly expensive to replace but I doubt you will have to. Good luck Thumbs Up

Could be something as simple as a sensor, of which there are many.On my 2008 Puma the dash light came on within the first four months and it turned out to be a sensor needed changing on the fuel system. Cannot remember which one. There was no erratic running or noticable drop in performance so if this is your glitch hopefully it not impact on the result of your MOT. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

Won't help before your MOT but I would recommend a Scangauge. Will cost you about the same as a diagnostic from your dealer and effectively pay for itself straight away. Surprised nobody in your area has offered to assist with a fault reader!

Thumbs Up If you go through life with your head in the sand....all people will see is an ar5e!!

Treat every day as if it is your last....one day you will be right!!

Was going to nip into the dealers this afternoon, but was running late so had to keep going. Next time I started it, engine management light went out! Happy days! Good job I didn't stop off at the dealers really, could have been quite embarrassing!

All being well it'll fly through its MOT with a pass now, no warning lights to worry about! Just got a brake light to replace, found a little auto spares shop round the corner from work who even offered to replace them for me. They replaced the number plate lights but I had to stop them butchering the screws on the brake light cover by using the wrong size screw driver!

Warranty runs out at the end of this month, so I'll take it to the dealers and get them to give it the once over and sort out a few little niggles, but come pay day I'll be investing in a scangauge or similar.

Thanks for the help Thumbs Up
