Amazing how cheap sheet aluminium is (see eBay...)
I'm getting a bit obsessed with it - go-karts, tables, skate ramps, even shelves too Thumbs Up

Zag - can't you use the bottom half of that dog guard? Laughing Tell someone you love them today because life is short.
But shout it at them in German because life is also terrifying and confusing...

I made one for my 90. Used 3mm ply rested on the top of my window guards, but with a little playing it could have gone from the roof seam. Used a bit of angle along the front for rigidity and attached it to the dog guard at the back.

Even got some nets from MSS for underneath.

I liked the look of the unit in the back of Ian Woolley's (Mudrut) Utility - he bought the truck with it on apparently but this is what he advised

Ok, I did quite a bit of detective work on this one for you. It turned out that the roof shelf thingy was made by Trek Overland. I have just spoken to Claire at Trek and she confirmed that it was a prototype. However, they are in the process of producing some more in quantity. She suggested that you email her (info@trekoverland.com) and she will let you know when they have a batch ready.

My other option/thought is to use some redundant bed slats which come already slightly curved, made of ply and with a spacing webbing, that I just happen to have lying around

The best roof level shelf/cage I have seen is the one in our red 110 (OK you could say I am biased! Razz )

Agreed mesh isn't so good, a solid shelve is much better. I have to work around the interior window trim and make some brackets up to fix onto the roof fixing bolts. Is yours a sheet of Ali turned up at the ends, did you need anymore strengthening in the middle, was it about 3MM you used????? Laughing

Also how did you attach the awning rail to your Thule bars (like it Wink )

Also where did you get the mesh from to make your seat box cages and shelf?

Thanks Zag, it's flat Ali, 2mm, with ali 90 degree angle at the front and back which strengthens the shelf, the bolts as you can see from my gallery go through the angle.

I fabricated some plates to fit the rail to the Thule bars and simply Bolted the plates to he Thule rail Thumbs Up

That is what my one started as.

I got it from boab, but was disappointed with the materials and build. So rebuilt it with Ali flat plate, instead of wood slates that they couldn't be bothered the fix properly, and also added another couple of cross members to stop items falling down. Am now very happy with it.

The boab one looks like an Ikea slatted bed frame/base (but worse quality)Shocked
It's given me an idea 'cos I've just been cleaning out the garage and I've got one in there... Thumbs Up Tell someone you love them today because life is short.

Andy i am very surprised that you were disappointed with the quality of the rack. FYI i actually cut and bent the materials to be fully assembled and welded up by my old boss who sells them to chris @ boab (No plug intended or implied)


I know when they were designed and built, i suggested to use 1inch weld mesh instead of the wood but chris at boab said the wood would do as it was for light items. 2004 TD5 Defender 90 xs station wagon

I was disappointed that it was wood, and that it was only partially fixed. So your bit was loverly.

Can't understand why wood would better than Ali. So I agree with you
