VPLDV0061 - Legal Xenon bulb upgrade
Received the newest Defender brochure from LR Switzerland and noticed that in the Accessories section one can now order directly from LR a set of Xenon bulbs to use in the existing H4 lamp units on a Defender 2007 onward. Saw that LR UK offer this same accessory. Seems a fully road legal replacement for standard H4 bulbs. Link is attached.

Question is, has anybody already used these? Worth its money?
And will they also fit the H4 lamp units of the SVX? (presume they will, but still checking)

If they are really good, intend to order them so that they can be installed prior to a long trip I will make thursday.

At that price they will still be normal filament-type H4 bulbs, with Xenon gas in the envelope. They're not an HID retrofit.  1988 90 Td5 NAS soft top

Sure, that is why they probably are fully road legal as replacement H4 bulbs. But I am really interested if anybody can confirm that they indeed give a better brighter light than standard H4. Land Rover is offering them with exactly that argument.

So still interested if someone can confirm Idea Question

In any case, I did order a set from LR here in Geneva, will be delivered at dealer tuesday and will be installed wednesday afternoon. Just in time for my 850km trip to Belgium thursday Thumbs Up I will give my opinion when I am back in the weekend Wink You never actually own a Defender. My first message, and I hope it's useful!

I bought my 90XS last September, and had the LR Xenon bulb upgrade.

In comparison to another TdCi 90 which I use occasionally, I can confirm that they make a huge difference.

They emit a much whiter, more defined beam on dipped, and a far better high beam.

100% recommended!

John. Currently....... all gone...... pending delivery of a mid life crisis.......
Previously..... Quite a few! I really am a sucker for them!

Fully agree Exclamation

As posted before I have mine now for a month or so in use, and compared to the standard H4's before, this is a world of difference. Nice crisp natural white light, much brighter, and luckily not a shade of blue. Great and legal upgrade Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

They are just standard size H4 bulbs which will fit in any Halogen light unit, so no problem at all. Pretty sure as already said by others that they are either made by Osram, Philips or PIAA, but one thing is for sure, Land Rover picked a very good one with nice white and sharp edged light emission. My SVX has the clear H4 lenses, but believe they will also be a very nice upgrade in the standard stock light units. An inexpensive worthwhile upgrade Thumbs Up You never actually own a Defender. Hi Gents

Can you all straighten me out on something.

Is it "illegal" to put H4 HID's int the standard housings and when did this legislation come into force?

I have an old porsche 911 993 with tungsten filament lamp housings and have had HID conversion in it for about 8 years with no MOT problems.

I was hoping to do the H4 HID conversion on my 2010 Puma 90

Thanks

Ash

Strictly speaking it is illegal, and as far as I know always has been, unless the vehicle is also equipped with headlamp washers and automatic light levelling to try and prevent blinding oncoming traffic. However, there are so many cars about now with these retrofitted, I think most MOT stations either turn a blind eye, or don't understand the construcyion and use regulations.

HID retrofit kits are not approved on various levels for Defender.

The 2012 MOT now contains specific guidelines for the detection and possible failure of vehicles fitted with aftermarket HID kits in order to start to clamp down on the amount of illegal kits.

The lamp on the vehcile must be used with the appoved light source so you cannot stick LED bulbs into your signal lights or HID into your headlights on a Defender legally.
