TD5 transfer problem
Hi there!

A good friend has broken the transfer of his beloved TD5 (LT230 43D transfer case) and he need to replace it.

Some questions for the specialists:

Are all the housing of the LT230" D type" equals and only changes the pinions inside or have some differences that not allow to exchange it (Housing/pinions)?

Can he install a LT230 34D from a Discovery V8 instead?

Thanks in advance Eduardo

I would assume that the transfer case from the v8 would be a 1.2 whereas the defender td5 have a 1.4 ratio you can still do it you will get improved motorway driving and fuel economy

I know Ashcroft offer a gear set to make your box a 1.2 for defenders

But it just depends if your box is a 1.2 or 1.4

Big Steve,
The current Defender's transfer is a 1.41 (43D),
The Discovery V8 is also 1.41 (34D)

Can he use the 34D in the TD5 without major modifications?
Or,
Can he use any "D" housing with a 43D set of pinions/shafts,etc ?

Thanks Eduardo

You need to swap over the high / low detect switch housing from the original box. Other then that, they are the same. My t-box was also from a disco v8 which is 10 yrs older than my 10 yr old td5. From the land of the most expensive land rover defenders on planet earth. At 125k for a XS 110 csw and you get to own it only for 10yrs! Please find me a good reason to stay on this island.
