If I remeber I've got the front at 30 but might take that to 32 and I'm sure I put the rear at 40 which seems ok and not too crashy.  |

90 T/C.
302 miles 49.11 litres / 4.546 = 10.8 Imperial gallons = 27.96 MPG. Half the mileage was local pottering about on 205x80x16 tyres, the other half Motorway on 235x85x16. RPM's no higher than 2000 at any time. H. |

If using two different tyre sizes like that, have you taken into account that the odometer will be either under- or over-reading when using one of them? Darren

IF your odometer was correct when on the 205's, with the 235's on your speed will be 65.8mph when your odometer reads 60mph.

TR51 is essentially correct, except that the odometer is the part that records the distance you've travelled rather than the speed you're travelling at.
If your 90 was originally delivered with the 205 tyres, then the speedo and odo would be calibrated for that size. The 235 tyres are around 10% bigger, so for every 100 miles recorded as travelled, you'd actually have covered 110 miles. This would have the effect of improving your MPG, but you'd need to know exactly how many miles were recorded on each size of tyre to work it out properly. The opposite is also true. If your 90 was originally set up for 235's and you swapped them for 205's, then your odometer would over read, i.e. for every 100 miles recorded, you've only travelled approximately 90, which would make your real MPG figure worse than it seems. None of this takes into account the inherent inaccuracies in speedos and odo's, but as we're all dealing with essentially the same inaccuracies, then the figures can be usefully compared if even they aren't strictly accurate. Great website! Really good to get an idea of what I want on my next tyres! Just a quick  question... How wide can you go on tyres before you a) need wider rims, and b) need to adjust the steering stops?
Currently on 235/85/16, thinking of going up to something like 265/75/16 which gives roughly the same figures for distance travelled etc. Presumably the wider the tyre, the better the grip on and off road? |

265's will fit on the standard Boost alloys but are a bit big for standard steel wheels. You may need to adjust the lock stops, but it seems to depend on how it left the factory as some do and some don't.
As for better grip on and off road, that really depends on the type of tyre and the prevailing terrain. Some tyres work better in the narrower widths and visa versa. In practice though, I doubt you'd be able to tell much difference between 235's and 265's in most of the typical Land Rover tyre types. When I changed from 235 General TR to 265 BFG AT's the deeper tread pattern put the spedo 2mph out (high), fit perfectly on Boost Alloys with no alteration to steering stops. I found, from my experience, the wider tires reduced the rocking while cornering... JMHO |

Old tires : 235/85/16 (General TR) New (er) : 265/75/16 (BFG AT) Hope this helps... I can take a picture of the all terrains on it tonight if you want a look, and have an old photo with the generals on kicking around somewhere. |

Over the last 2518 miles I have been recording the fuel consumption in a nice Android App and have consumed 479l of diesel
I averaged just over 24.5 mpg in a TD5 110 XS SW on the standard LR fit 235's, thats with a full unladen roofrack as in the photo at the top of the web page. I commute 11 miles each way most of which I tend to pootle along at 60mph though thats climbing the Chilterns every morning. |
