1996 Defender 110 300 Tdi USW Bonatti Grey

12v Portable Compressor

Id like to get a 12v portable compressor for pumping the tyres up on my Defender & caravan.

Ive read good things about the T-Max & T-Max Heavy Duty - are these the same product?

Also, this Ring RAC900 gets good reviews as well

Any thoughts

I thought about the large T max one . But I think I will eventually get the ARB portable compressor from LRS. I did think about fitting an onboard version but think the portable one would get more use.

2015 Defender 90 Puma 2.2 XS CSW Keswick Green

The ring one in the above pic' looks very like the one I got from Maplin's about a year ago for about £18. I wasn't sure it would be up to the job as it's a fair bit smaller that the Tmax types, but for general use, including pumping up my own 235/85 R16's and the odd 750 R16, it's been excellent and peformed far better and longer than expected for a £18 jobbie.

I have used the ARB CKMP 12 for several years and it is a great bit of kit.

A couple of tips, cut off the crocodile clip and put an Anderson connector on, makes life easier. Also replace the standard connector with the ARB inflator with gauge. Have a look HERE

Recently we have had a play with the ARB CKMTP 12 (details HERE which has a 4 litre air tank. Now that is an extremely good compressor, was fun 'playing' with it.

If you want to grab yourself an ARB CKMP 12 at a bargain price come and see us at Driffield.

The ARB CKMP 12 is conveinient for taking between vehicles, as it is so portable.

If you want an on board permanent air compressor consider the CKMA12 or the high output twin compressor CKMTA12. Some of the comp boys use the CKMTA 12 for onboard air

Is this the same as yours Chris? I see it comes with a cigarette lighter socket (though I dont have one of those sockets in my landie

)

Most 12 volt sockets are rated at either 16 or 20 amps.

The high output ones such as the ARB ones have an inline fuse of 30 or 40 amps.

So true high output ones will not work off standard 12 volt socket.

Yes, looks like it. Obviously compared to the ARB one it's small fry. I was a bit uncertain weather it would be up for the job, but it has done a good job. You may wish to extend the power lead anyway, so not a hard job to fit crocodile clips.

You may struggle to reach the rear wheels on a 130 with the standard power lead. O.k in a 90 and o.k for other vehicles when powered by your own if you park close to each other.

O.k, it's not really for such use but for occational usage in such situations it's been fine. Gauge reads a couple of psi low.

I would have liked a quick realease valve attachment though.

2002 Defender 110 Td5 XS DCPU Bonatti Grey

A few years ago we had prep'd our 90 to go out to Morocco on a shoestring and when it cam to compressors we got 2 £3.99 when you buy some fuel jobbies.

On the trip we had to air up our tyres for the return leg and being a little pessimistic about the compressors performance I parked next to someone who had a £120 TruckAir compressor, figuring if mine gave up I could use theirs aftery they were done.

By the time I had filled my tyres (using 1 compressor as I couldn't find the other!) they had done 3 tyres and were looking at the casing on their truck air bubble and melt away. In the end my £3.99 jobbie filled their final tyre.

I have since invested in a T-Maxx, mainly as I would like to make an on board air system eventually, but until then I still carry the £3.99 jobbie as well. I don't think spending loads of money is always the way forward. 2002 Defender 110 DC

Thats interesting ben. I would only be topping up the tyre pressures (not inflating from flat) so perhaps I ought to try a cheap one first.

When I looked at them recently the only thing more money could get me was a quicker inflation time. If you have the time I would say go to the cheaper end of the market. 2002 Defender 110 DC

I was at one time pondering as to getting a Warn or ARB compressor but in reality whilst don't doubt their quality just to inflate the tyres the T-maxx would do the job perfectly and at eaily less than half the price and more it's a much better choice. If the were the same prices though it would be a different matter.
