I think WX is for weather receiver (an American thing).
Channel 16 is/was common used by truckers SQL, is squelch, this alters the receiving power, so you can reduce and cut out all the background noise/interference Hi/lo is it power rating. If talking to people near then running on low makes battery last longer I am sure adult will be along soon with more accurate answers, but you've got something to start with Andy |

As Andy says, SQL (Squelch) cuts out background noise between transmissions, but initially, turn it fully clockwise whilst you're trying to pick up tranmissions, and then gradually turn anticlockwise once you've got something to eliminate the noise.
Hi/Lo - Not sure if that is Transmission power (As andy says), or whether thats a crude equivalent of RF gain on modern CB's (which is normally a rotary dial to filter out weaker signals) On the UK band, from my limited experience/knowledge, channel 19 I believe is the calling (chat) channel - handy for radio checks and traffic reports. 9 is the emergency channel. I guess you'd need to set the unit to INT'L (International ??) but I've no idea if that would cover the UK frequency band these days. Your main problem on the roads will be that as with most handhelds used inside a vehicle with the integral aerial, your transmission range will be limited (might even be a couple of hundred yards best), so the unit might work fine but it will be hit and miss if you find somebody in close proximity for long enough to get a meaningful test just when you're out and about. (If you just gonna use it on laning convoys then guess it would be fine) Have you got any local LR mates with CB's who you could do some tests with you being outside the vehicle ? You could always give Jim at 4x4cb.com a shout . He's a member on here I believe but not very active. A really nice chap and I'm sure he'd be happy to give you some further advice Jon - 110 td5 [sold]. Currently Defenderless. |
