Utility Wagon - 988 kilo payload
Perusing the 2.2 brochure still trying to convince myself to stop being a tight arse and buy one. Well wanted to wait to see how some things panned out first so back looking today having finally got a 2.2 brochure I noticed that the Utility Wagons have a payload of 988 kg, which I take it means they're not VAT reclaimable?

Am I reading that right. Surely LR would have fought for that extra 12kg. As it'll be a business purchase kind of puts the kybosh on one if its not a vat ok vehicle.

That is what I thought. But I'm sure there rule about it having to carry over a 1000kg. I suppose that might be for Car derived vans. Maybe the defender is a Van derived car!

And they (the Utility Wagon) are N1 (cheap road tax but lower speed limits in places and can be harder to get insurance perhaps) and can be classed as a van for benefit in kind as well as VAT terms Thumbs Up

Note a 7 seater 110 can't be classed as a van for benefit in kind (not sure about VAT as it was irrelevant to me due to BIK)

C 2015 110 USW XS in Santorini with premium contrast leather seats in tan/black, black headlining and with Dual Finish alloys (in the garage, now on Wolf rims with Goodyear MT/Rs)

2012 '62' 2.2 X-Tech 110 USW now gone ...
1984 90 soft top with full roll cage, 200 tdi engine etc now sold
2012 USW XS 2.2 "FUU" now gone....

Decided to ask HMRC as the rules are hard to understand, to be a van the payload has to be over 1000kg but the utility only has 988kg. Seems that doesn't matter. So here we have it in writing. You can claim the VAT back.

All Defenders are "dual purpose vehicles" as defined by C&U '86 (as amended) and as such are subject to car, not van, speed limits.
