Just for your reference.
pulled them yesterday, PUMA 75000km original. Click image to enlarge This is how it looks when the half shafts start eating away the drive flange. Note the shavings. About 1mm play on them now, time to replace i would say. 1 less source of knocking and play in the driveline. :) Admin note: this post has had its images recovered from a money grabbing photo hosting site and reinstated |

I changed mine yesterday, another thing to look for is that on the new ones you will see a "flat" across the tops of the teeth in the flange, worn flanges will have "pointed" teeth. This will be the wearing out of the teeth in the flange which is made of a softer metal than the half shaft. Mine could be rotated about an 1/8th of a turn on the shaft, still driving but with a lot of backlash in the drive. Plenty more things to renew yet before I get shot of most of the backlash, it's a Land Rover there will be slack in the drive but I do need to keep up some maintenance to save on big bills in the future, these things don't self heal no matter how much we'd like them to

Leave them long enough and drive will be lost. Unexpectedly, with a hideous noise, at an inconvenient moment. Such as pulling out at a junction. (Ask me how I know)!
You will also be amazed at how much renewing worn drive flanges and halfshafts improves the gearchange and clutch operation of a Puma. They really don't like backlash in the transmission. |
