Hmm. That's a good point. However, with wider tyres you're cutting a wider groove in the ground (short and fat profile rather than long and thin) so more of the tyre is in contact with 'fresh' ground.

That could either be a help (when the surface has most grip) or a hindrance (when the bottom of a rut has more grip). Given that the part of the tyre that makes the most difference is the outer tread on the sidewalls, presumably long and thin (narrower tyre) has more of that in contact with the ground.

The thot plickens! One that started out as a 2.4 TDCi 110 XS

Not quite true, the footprint of the wider tyre will be larger , it won`t be shorter but will be wider, and the larger the diameter is the longer the footprint becomes Thumbs Up

KL71 outstriping BFG sales big time, BIG difference in price and a great tyre, done 14K+ on my 110 and prefer the ride, road holding and wet weather performance, don't look out of place on my Hotchkiss Jeep either, they won't last as long as BFG but that no bother to me, we fitted some 305/70x16 the other week, now they look mean.
