Big Landy!
Spotted this at a filling station (of sorts) in Tanzania, just outside the Nongorogoro crater.

Quite a few of these conversion over there, high top, extra seats, and some had lifting roofs to allow for game viewing.

We were in an even longer stretched Land Cruiser (I'll see if I can find the picture of that some where.)

Could be a perfect family wagon Thumbs Up

I've been to the same area, amazing game viewing !

I can just see the handmade timber dash that a lot of these Defenders sport, I suppose its better than colour coding your Corsa dash Asbo orange Mr. Green

Same area, same type of Land Rover. Incredible the punishment they take doing 5 hours a day at 60 mph on those rutted sort of corrogated roads. After 2 weeks of that the vehicles we got had all their nuts n bolts checked, not much could stand up to that punishment - we had a TDi Thumbs Up

Tenting safari highly recommended for those wanting to sh/t themselves and have lions walking around during the night, their growl goes right through your bones Surprised A German woman was killed during our stay, dragged out of her tent by a lion as her feet where sticking out Neutral

We looked at the self drive version but decided against it first time round as we had another couple with us who are more 'lodge' oriented, (but we still managed to slip in a few tented camps) . Might have a go at that next time now we know what to expect, also with a driver guide we probably saw a lot more than we would on our own as they know where to look I guess.

We did an extension to Lake Natron which was well worth the effort, fantastic scenery and not many tourists there. Some great 'off roading" on the way (driver knew a short cut across country, still on tracks but very rough and lots of gully/river crossings)

All good fun.

Agreed we went for the guided drive as well. Forgot to clarify the German woman was having a lunchtime snooze when she was dragged off, she didn't have her feet sticking out of the tent at night!
