"...the 122,460 people that purchased a Wrangler in 2011 are proof that Americans will actually buy a 'spartan' utility vehicle like the Defender"
Could not have said it better! I'm going to email this article to LR! The four door Wrangler makes a good case for just how far off the mark Landrover are - it shows you can produce a modern vehicle with a decent engine and still retain the 'roots' and heritage. John

Petition time, me thinks. Petition Land Rover to read this and then actively take note of it. Really good read. Bet you Tata will mass produce a great Defender utility for India but will be unable to get it into Europe due to various regulations. 1982 88" 2.25 diesel

A petition won't help. The accountants will ask marketing why 200,000 people from the UK signed it yet only 20,000 worldwide bought one. Marketing will say "cos we haven't got the DC100 to sell"" and that's that. 2015 110 USW XS in Santorini with premium contrast leather seats in tan/black, black headlining and with Dual Finish alloys (in the garage, now on Wolf rims with Goodyear MT/Rs)

The other day I got dusted by a wrangler. Land Rover never bothered to keep the US market. Sounds like it could have been worth it 120,000 sales. Defender only sells 20,000 think they got it very wrong.

Absolutely spot on. This comment sums up my feelings on this:
"With Land Rover there's always complaints about how the brand is moving away from it's roots; Jeep never really forgot them." This is where Land Rover are making a huge mistake. Something which will inevitably hurt them. I know people who have bought Land Rovers partially because of the Defender. 'At least it's proper offroad company'. Jeep proudly displays their Wrangler everywhere, Land Rover does not. In fact they seem ashamed of the Defender. Absolutely incredible. I admit to having a peek at those Unlimited Wranglers. They do seem pretty cool. |

The roots of a land rover was to make a vehicule to export. The current defender is missing out on so many countries.

I don't think that's strictly true, although I agree the export market, and US market, is essential. That, and other things, do mean some changes are absolutely necessary for the Defender. But again, Jeep updated their Wrangler, without losing the sense of it being a Wrangler. I'm actually quite OK with losing things like air suspension, solid axles and whatnot, if it makes practical sense (there are offroad benefits to independent suspension, for instance). But it would be great to have a sense of evolution for the vehicle, and of serving the same appeal that the current Defender caters for so well. If we're stuck with only the DC100, then a Wrangler begins to look quite tempting. |

I had a play with one (a sahara) about two years ago. I got the salesman to take off all the doors and roof etc, they just lifted out, it's a fantatic and simple system. Oh, not to mention that even with that option to just take them off, the panel aligment and door seals are absolutely spot on. Not something that a defender can say really.
Also the inside was all compressed rubber with drain holes so very very easy to clean - just stuff a hose in and wash out all the mud etc. They're very good vehicles, as the sales numbers confirm, and those people who whine about them should try one. Ditto Landcruiser - the older ones are just SO much better than a defender in terms of capability and mechanicals. Having said that I still love the defender, just wish it was a bit more modern which hopefully the concept car will lead to. |
