Puma MY11 Traction control
Hi All,

A mate of mine tested his traction control by lifting one wheel off the ground on a track. He says that the wheel spun around many times/ almost continuously before the traction control started working. Now I am sure mine does not do this. Can anyone confirm.
Also can someone please point me to a thread or explain here the differences between the MY11 and newer traction control compared to the pre MY11 traction control.

Bruce, the TC on mine (MY10) is very sensitive, sometimes even engages when I hit potholes, so it sounds like his TC is not engaging as it should?

As for pre- & post-MY11, the difference is when the CDL is not engaged. IIRC, on pre-MY11, the TC works only on each axle, whereas on post-MY11 it works across both axles, much like the 4ETC on the D2. --

When I did a Land Rover Experience day, we cross-axled a 110 with TC/ABS (mine's a County so I doesn't have this!), you needed to get the revs up slightly (over 1000rpm, and probably nearer 1500rpm) for TC to kick-in...Otherwise it just sat there, cross-axled with the wheels spinning... Defender "Puma" 2.4 110 County Utility (possibly the last of the 2.4's)

on my MY10 90 when cross axled the TC kicks in at quite low revs, almost on tickover, the TC combined with the anti stall seems to work in tandem? BM52

This is the same for me, a LRE instructor said that they changed it around this point so considerably more revs were required... not sure whats the benefit of doing this?

don't get hung up on the revs, its the wheel speed that it pics up on, yes higher revs higher wheel speed but you could be in a higher gear for any given engine speed so not necessarily rpm related.

Pre11MY was a seimens system and worked across axle only, ie say front axle, it monitors both wheel speeds and brakes one of the wheels if its going a certain % faster than the other wheel it is monitoring on the same axle. It does not take into account what the other axle is doing. With CDL unlocked you could have two font wheels doing 30mph and the rear axle wheels stationary and the ETC wont do anything about it.

11MY is bosch system and works on sensing all 4 wheel speeds relative to each other not just 2 across any one axle. therefore for Post 11MY you dont need CDL locked for it be most effective. all other LR platforms use this 4 wheel speed sensing option.

ETC (all systems) works by applying a breaking force to a wheel if it is determined that wheel is spinning a certain % faster than other wheel(s). this in itself adds load to the vehicle so an increase in engine speed can be required. the greater the speed of the spinning wheel in relation to the other wheel(s) the quicker and more effective ETC will respond and act.

so at idle low 1st one wheel doing say 5mph (in the air) the other 3 stationary ETC will work but it will respond quite slowly and wont brake that hard or for that long as the speed differentiation between that wheel and others is low.

If you were to increase the speed of that spinning wheel ( up a gear same revs or more rpm) to say 30mph ETC will react alot quicker and brake the wheel harder and for longer periods. (it doesn't actually brake it constantly is cadence brakes it (max amount is 10 times a second))

this is why you get a lurching effect at low speeds when ETC cuts in when the speed differentiation is not great enough for the wheel to be braked long enough to allow you to move forward. (which occurs by the power taking the other route through the open diff)

Tgt speed for Siemens and Bosch systems i believe is the same. BUT Bosch system is not so aggressive when it responds at low speed differentiations and is therefore not always felt or experienced as much when comparing it to pre11MY. Cheers

anti stall will work as the name suggests to stop it stalling, as ETC works it stuff it increases engine load, antistall increases fuelling to overcome the extra load.

on pre11MY in extreme circumstances with no driver interaction ETC can stall the vehicle. it can still stall a post 11MY but its less likely to as the ETC doesnt work as harshly at the lower engine speeds where you are relying on anti stall.

and yes we do spend alot of time on rollers testing these things! Cheers
