I knew about cold air = dense air = more power but I what I did not know is that it reduces engine coolant temperature to a degree that it would make a difference to what we are talking about.


Every time I feel I have spent enough on my Defender something else comes up Rolling Eyes

Hi Bruce

I have also struggled with a simmilar problem.

I am not sure it is the same symptoms but mine is a perfect running car up to 120km/h and then as soon as it gets a bit warm outside the car struggles to stay at 110km/h. So not a massive powerloss but you can feel there is less power.

I have also struggled with a simmilar problem.
With my Ultra-Gauge I have noticed that as soon as the inlet temp moves above 34degC the ECU cuts back on the Fuel Rail Pressure as well as the boost pressure. Now, in the cooler climate, it doesn't do it at all and my inlet temps almost never goes above 27degC.

So, my waranty runs out in September. Gues what my first up-grade will be........yip, intercooler and silicone hoses.

On the Ultra-Gauge I have noticed that it has nothing to do with coolent temp but only gets influenced by INLET temp. And inlet temp and coolant temp doesn't seem to be correlated.

I also get this. Spoke to the service manager at LR Vereeniging, Giovanni, who tells me the fix is a larger intercooler which he gets from Elton at Turbochip (or whatever he is called now). Elton quoted me ZAR4.5k ex VAT (I think). Giovanni was at pains to point out that it is not a LRSA approved mod, but definitely solves the problem of the power-down on hot days.

Regarding why it happens to some Pumas and not others I think it has a lot to do with driving style. Mine occurs when it's hot and I'm ascending a hill, but only after I've been gunning it for a long period. If I've been driving sedately it won't do it.

Similar problem here appears during hot weather after several hours of driving.
Probably a new intercooler will be the solution in the long term. Sad

OK, right so what we think is that it is the inlet temp that is causing the shutdown rather than the coolant temp, right? That makes sense but when mine did it was because the coolant got too hot (plastic bag over the grill) so maybe it does work both ways. Think I may look into this more when I get a few spare hours and try to reproduce the conditions that mine overheated.
