Got my Defender back from the dealer after replacement of the center dash console. Noticed that the distress signal switch (located top center of the dash, switch with the red triangle logo) is not illuminated when the lights are on, this contrary to all other switches which are green illuminated when the lights are switched on.
I forgot, is this supposed to be so? Is this distress button not having any light which would illuminate the red triangle logo? Would be surprised if that would be the case, but just not sure anymore Anyone can check theirs and let me know? If it has to be illuminated, anyone know if that is a small light bulb, or is it a led? And can it be replaced in the existing switch, or do I have to order an entirely new command switch. Mine also has its own life. Bulb is ok but sometimes it doesn't light up for weeks, even a good knock on the dash doesnt bring it to life.
It should be illuminated at all times. When switched on the instrument cluster warning triangle lights up indicating the hazard lights are on. |

This is interesting. I just came back from the dealer where the car remains til tmrw for a different electric problem (see below). They looked at the rear of the distress lights switch, and... there indeed is a little light bulb in it, but.... no wiring at all for that little bulb so the switch just cannot light up when you turn the engine contact on, or when you switch on the lights. So this distress light switch is always dark, has a light bulb fitted, but without juice
As I could hardly believe that, they checked another Defender they have in stock, and yes, same thing A light bulb for illuminating the switch, but no wiring Presume those are the particularities/mysteries of Defender electrics... The other thing with my electrics that the dealer today are breaking their head on is something went nuts with the wiring of the front fog lights (which they correctly installed/wired when the car was new). The wiring is via a relay, and the front fog lights only can be turned on together with either the parking lights or with the low beam. When you switch to high beam, the front fogs will automatically go off, coming back on when going back to low beam. So far so good. Yesterday I noticed that the front fogs would not come on with the parking lights or with the low beam, but they do come on (even if their switch is not put on) at all times with the high beam. This morning at the dealer it showed that the relay was corroded, so they replaced that with a new one. Then suddenly the front fogs can come on again with either parking lights or low beam, but here we go.... Now they also stay on (asked or not asked) with the high beam, but one of the high beam lights stays off So the mechanic scratched his head, kept the car, and digged up the electric schemes.... Is this Defender electrics or as they said themselves, "Oh dear, English car electrics" Still, I find it very weird that the wiring for the illumination of the distress light switch is missing You never actually own a Defender. On my Puma 08 the hazard switch doen't have a light, like the other switches have. I asked the dealer, and he said they don't have a bulb now. Maybe this is true... I must have alook,

Nice. I guess adding the electric feed wires for this inside illumination of the distress signal button probably was one of the key improvements when going from my 2008 to your 2009 model year
Is there anybody on the forum with a 2007 or 2008 Puma who has this button illuminated? You never actually own a Defender. Mine is 2010 and at least last night it was illuminated, still I remember that I also saw it dark although the lights were on. Another detail to be checked in one moment,

On my 2007 DC the switch is illuminated. Checked in the dark last night, turn the sidelights on and the switch lights up. |

This Hazard Warning Lights Switch has been used in the Defender since the 2002 dash update (not to mention the variant used previously in Discovery 1, Soft Dash RRC and Rover cars), it has always had night-time illumination.
The wiring for this (in a Defender) is - Connector terminal 4 - Red/Orange trace - Live from sidelights Connector terminal 5 - Black - Earth As for the switch's bulb, it's not listed in Microcat for the 2002-2006, or 2007 -> Defenders (so most dealers tell you it's not replaceable and try to get you to buy a complete new switch). It is replaceable, it's listed for the 300Tdi Discovery 1 Hazard Warning Lights Switch (which is essentially the same switch, but vertical instead of horizontal), its part number is - STC1205 - BULB & HOLDER ASSEMBLY, CLEAR http://www.rimmerbros.co.uk/Item--i-STC1205
When you say 'no wiring' do you mean that the Red/Orange and Black wires are missing from terminals 4 and 5 of the switch connector? Or that there doesn't appear to be any wires to the little bulb? If you look at the little bulb, its holder has contact wires in its base, these make contact with the circuit board inside the switch. . My 2008 is illuminated.
I am pretty sure it is a C&U requirement that the switch is illuminated. Richard Either a 90, 110 or 130. Discovery 5 |

Thanks all comments. Seems my dealer here has been trying to feed me a story. Will show them this thread tomorrow and take it from there. You never actually own a Defender. You merely look after it for the next generation.

Just replaced mine. Lights up fine now but does not flash when I press it in like most hazard units ... is that correct? Cheers,
